Griswold Brass Popover/Muffin Pan #18
« on: September 01, 2006, 01:12:32 PM »
Hey all you experts on Griswold. I have come across a popover/muffing pan #18 / 6141 from Griswold. It is pretty much exactly like the cast iron version except that I am almost positive it is made or coated with polished brass. It looks like gold to be honest. I enclosed picture to help. Can any of you "Gurus" out there help me out on this one? Have you ever seen or heard of one like this. Thanks in advance for your time and expertise. My e-mail is acoxscoins@aol.com.

Griswold master pattern, perhaps?

Does a magnet stick to it?  If so, it's plated, if not it just might be solid brass.

Aaron, if it does fail the magnet test, could you give the dimensions of the pan as precisely as you can? From what I remember the master patterns where slightly bigger than the production pans, to account for the expansion of the hot iron.

Well, I had a weak refrigerator magnet and it DID stick to it, or at least it seems that it did. The pan dimensions are 9 3/16" from handle end to handle end. It is 5 9/16" across the top from outer edge to outer edge. One "chamber" measures 2 1/32" across the top(inside of rims). They are 1 17/32" deep. On one end under the handle it has what I believe is the letter "T" and the number "1". The "1" looks like an impressed stamp and the "T" looks to be "carved" by hand. Are master patterns scarce? I also added another picture. Thanks for all your answers and help--Aaron

Aaron, what you may have is a standard production chromed popover.  How'd it get that color?  Possibly by cleaning in a self-cleaning oven or heating to over 450 degrees.  The coloring looks much like the blued exhaust pipes on motorcycles (older ones) where the pipes come out of the engine.
