1033---
« on: July 15, 2006, 08:01:56 PM »
I stopped at an old house that had junk all around it. Talked to a older man about cast iron, he said "there is some upstairs I think".  All that I could find was Tiawan stuff.  I got down on my knees to be sure and there was a skillet stuck between the shelves and the wall.  All I could see was 1033 on it.  When I got home I looked it up in my RED book. Griswold--unmarked Iron Mountian #8.  I am a happy newbie.

Soon you will find yourself travelling with your books and not having to wait to get home to look something up.  It happens to a lot of us. ;D  When you find yourself down on your knees looking in dark dusty places, you know the addiction has taken a good hold..........sorry, no cure except more doses of iron.

Nice find.....Keep looking,          Scott

I usually take one of the books with me but yesterday I took off on the bike and forgot it. My wife and I have been to flea markets and she has stood there holding a piece of iron and I am looking in the book for infomation. What a team. I think I have the sickness. I am way behind on cleaning and seasoning. I look for more iron everyday and sometimes I go out of my way because I don't want to miss anything. Help me! ! !

Fingernails darken with improper use as scrapers in an effort to uncover trademarks, pattern numbers, and sizes.  As the disease progresses, the books become dog-eared and tattered.  The pages turn black from constant thumbing and flipping by grimey digits.    An extreme symptom of the illness is hand washing before using the restroom.  Oddly, this manifestation tends to first present on Saturdays.
Hold still rabbit so I can dunk you in this bucket of lye!

Boy Jeff, it sounds like you got that diagnosis business down to a science.  ;)

I might also add that getting down on your knees so that you can see underneath of tables and shelves in all the cobwebs and dust is another sure symptom as well.  ;)
