Wagner, National and Sidney
« on: May 30, 2006, 04:58:17 PM »
What is the difference between a Wagner skillet marked Sidney and one marked National. Different age? Different manufacturing lacation?

Yes and probably.  If the Sidney is in script print it's a product of the Sidney Hollow Ware Co. and probably predates Wagner.  However, Wagner ended up buying the Sidney Hollow Ware Co. to increase production of its wares.  I believe the old Sidney Hollow Ware foundry was where the "SIDNEY" pieces were made and those pieces were just like Wagner's regular marked pieces.  In fact, you can often see where WAGNER was removed from or filled in on the pattern.  WAGS reprinted a nice SIDNEY catalog c.1905 and all those pieces are illustrated.  Obviously they are Wagner items from the style, etc.

National was a cheaper line of skillets plus a waffle iron made by Wagner (I don't think they came from the SIDNEY foundry however-whoops, just checked my catalog and there are NATIONAL skillets listed).  Being that SIDNEY and WAGNER ware were made by the same company anything would have been possible and the National skillets might have been made in the main Wagner plant yet included in the Sidney catalog...or they may have been made in the SIDNEY foundry, too.

The National skillets in sizes 7-9 only were slightly smaller in diameter and a bit lower than regular skillets and were made to offer a cheaper, price-competitive skillets to meet the competition.  National waffle irons had less features than the regular Wagner line.

I don't know when the SIDNEY ware foundry was shut down or sold or what happened but it did go away eventually.  National skillets were made for many years in a few variations.  Covers were made for the Natiional skillets but are very hard to find.

Steve, what did these covers look like? I wasn't aware that they ever made a cover for these skillets.

I guess I should look a little more carefully at the book. Thanks Ed

A full set of those covers will cost you the National Debt.

Well, I was outbid on this skillet but was made a second chance offer and picked it up for $31. Does anybody have any idea when it was made? I don't see it in the Blue Book.

The inside of the cover should have some patent dates so that will tell you the earliest it was made.  If the skillet has a 4 digit catalog number on it that would be from 1924 onward so I suspect the later 20's is when your "cheap" Wagner was made. National was a cheaper but, to me, no less quality line.  They are a little less in diameter and height than regular skillets.  National skillet covers are rare.  You did very well!

Bob, Make sure you see the 2nd. chance offer in your "My Messages" file. There are a lot of 2nd. chance offers made to the under bidder that are bogus. The bogus ones do not show up in "My Messages" as far as I know.

Thanks Harry. I checked before I accepted the offer and it WAS in "My Messages". Your right, you can't be too careful these days. I get multiple emails daily telling me that I need to update my paypal and ebay accounts. Thanks for the heads up though.
