it is unlikely that it is a repro, but I can't remember seeing this wording before.

I know that some waffle irons c.1900 have the wording THE NEW AMERICAN.  Is it possible that's what you have/saw?  I've never seen any marking THE NEW ERIE.

It was the NEW AMERICAN but the lettering is somewhat faint so I see how one could read it NEW ERIE.   The "new" part of the waffle iron might have been the ball hinge.

Jerry, It's a # 7, not a #6. Much cheaper.

Carol,
The iron went for a good price but I don't see it as being anything all that special or nice.  The writing is not very distinct.  These style irons are not rare and predate the Griswold trademark which appeared c.1909 so that's why it isn't on there.

There will be plenty more of the different Griswold waffle irons turn up.  You may have to pay more but do try to find one that is reallyl nice in most respects.
