Newbie ?s - an older #9 Dutch oven and skillet
« on: June 14, 2006, 12:26:46 PM »
My wife's grandmother just gave me her old Griswold #9 DO that her sister gave her YEARS ago.  It's in great shape, but needs a good cleaning and a re-season.  Is the self-cleaning oven method OK to use on this older cast iron?
I also have a 10.5" cast iron skillet she gave me in about the same condition.  It'll need the same treatment.
Can someone here help me "date" the DO and possibliy identify the skillet?

Thanks, Glenn

Welcome Glenn. Do you have the ability to take pictures and post them here? Both pieces could be cleaned in teh oven but I would caution doing the oven it tends to take the temper out of the bail and make them whimpy.

Here you are.  I hope they're clear enough.

Skillet bottom (there's a T on the handle bottom as well).

Glenn, Easy off works well.  Spray the DO and enclose in an airtight container.  Don't heat the skillets and spray with the yellow easy off, which can crack the skillets because of the temperature difference.  I would never use a self-cleaning oven but many people have used them without problems.

I'd recommend a lye bath, however, as the easiest way to clean them.

If you join WAGS we have a FAQ which compares various cleaning methods.

Also click the "cleaning cast iron" button at the top.

I second that and would never put any wire handes in the self cleaning oven.  Not sure that it WILL remove the temper but I think it did many years ago when I cleaned some do's in the oven.  Other pieces including aluminum are fine to clean there.

you can post as many pix as you want in any post, as long as you have a host to host the pix.  Otherwise you have to post one pix at a time, as the software on this site can only upload via FTP one at a time.

I myself wouldn't clean either of 'em. I'd just use 'em. Especially that beautiful dutch oven. What a sweet gift!

It is very easy to upload your pics to a web site like Flickr.com or Photobucket.com (just to name a few). Then you can insert a picture into a post here, works on most other boards as well.

After you've uploaded to one of the above mentioned sites, find the picture you want, right click on it, from the menu select Properties. A window will pop up and about half way down you will see a line for Address. Highlight and copy the address line (don't include the word Address).

Come back to your post window and click the botton in the top row, third from the left. This will insert a line (img][/img).  The line will actually have brackets on either end, I replaced them with parenthesis or the whole line would have been invisible in my post. Place your cursor between the brackets in the middle and paste the address line for your picture.

Sample pic... the 1951 Chambers range that I am currently restoring.
