Vollrath Skillet

HI,

Just a quick question on Vollrath skillets. I am a little hesitant bidding for them because (1) I am not sure how old they are (2) Less interests as shown by the general public.

The Vollrath company still exist, but I don't think they make cast iron skillets any more. The Smith and Wafford book does not mention them. Are they as collectable as the Griswolds?

Joe, they are not in the Book of Griswold and Wagner, but they are in the other Smith Wafford book, the Book of Wagner and Griswold.  This is the one we call the red book.  Vollrath are high quality cast skillets, but not highly collected as others.  They are great users.  The ones in the red book show dates from the 1920's -1960's.

Vollraths are nice quality, older pans and worth collecting if you like them, especially the marked ones I think.  You'll never find a lot of other collectors of them but nothing wrong with them.  Not easy to put a full set together.

Thank you, Roger and Steve. That answers my question. There are several Vollraths coming up on eBay and they appear to be in very good condition. I think for beginners like me I will stick with something that I am a little familiar with.

 I have a #8 vollrath that was my grandmothers and it almost went to the scap pile at public auction because it was so caked w/ crude.

I cleaned it and use it more than any other I own. It is the best seasoned and if I blacken fish and burn off the seasoning it seasons right back up. A little heavier than a Gris IMO but a really nice user. MIne is just marked with a sideways 8- but I wouldn;t give it up for the world. Espeacialy since I can remember my grandmother frying potatos in it when I was a spud.
