Info needed on Griswold small logo hinged pans.
« on: February 19, 2006, 04:51:39 PM »
Hi all! I just today acquired a Griswold #6, small logo, hinged skillet...the last one, I believe, that I needed to obtain to complete this set. I now have #3, #5, #6, #7, #8, and #9. Would these comprise the full set of this series skillets, or are other numbers needed? Also, do these pans carry any substantial collector value over their non-hinged, small block counterparts? Would there be any substantial value-added to having a complete set of these pans compared to just adding the sum of each individual skillet's value? I have no matching lids, so that's not a factor. Any help regarding this inquiry would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and best regards.

"Would these comprise the full set of this series skillets?"
Yes.

"Also, do these pans carry any substantial collector value over their non-hinged, small block counterparts?"
Probably a small amount.

I would think so.  Covers are hard to find and, with a complete covered set in great condition they would probably be worth a substantial amount to the RIGHT PERSON.

Let's see some others' opinions about this...

Lids for this set are likely the hardest to find, IMO.  I have yet to see a #3 for this set of skillets, so once one becomes available, it is likely to bring top dollar.  Not an easy set to put together, even without the lids.

The lids are hard to find. I've had a set together for a year or so and only have #6,#8 covers. Only sizes I've seen on ebay are the #5 which is high dollar and the #8. I got lucky on the #6s, I picked up two on my way home from the convention in Tenn. Both for $60.

Steve, Greg, & Ed: Thank you for your very insightful opinions regarding the small logo, hinged skillet series. The Blue Book (3rd edit) seems to list substantially higher values for this series pans than their small logo, non-hinged counterparts. Why, I dont know as without the very hard-to-find lids, they only serve the same purpose as the non-hinged variety. Ebay prices seem to reflect what you said, Steve, in that prices for #3s, #5s, #7s, and #8s seem to be a tad above the conventional small logo series. #6s and #9s seem to consistently exhibit substantially higher values. Seeing how well common sets of #3 to #9 small logo and smooth-bottom large logo skillets seem to fare on ebay, I'd think a complete hinged set would bring some serious money (i.e. more than the sum of its parts).  Only other oddity to the #6 I found today is that the number 6 is cast into the front handle section of the pan, unlike any of the other hinged nos. I have. Could be this was an early production unit, cast before Griswold did away with the upper handle number. Thanks, again, and best regards.

There was a 3 smooth hinged lid on E-bay in mid 2005 that went for almost $2100. I think the 7 and 9 are the hardest of the smooth skillets to find but their value doesn't seem to reflect their scarcity.

I can't answer that Donald.  But Griswold did change things along the way and did not always keep things consistant.
