Cast Iron 3-legged lid
« on: July 10, 2005, 08:30:49 AM »
Good Morning,  We are new members and had just picked up this neat old lid on one of our outtings.  We know it is a lid, either for DO or skillet, but was wanted to find out if anyone else would know anymore about it.  Possibly who or when it was made.  It is definetly pre-1900.
Thanks,
RV - (Rick & Val)

Here is the underneath side.  As you can see it sits nice and flat with the three legs underneath.

Wow! Very interesting. I doubt we can nail who made it without any markings but it is certainly unique. First on I have seen but I would comment to say it was probably sold as a lid that could be turned upsidedown and used as a griddle as many camp enthusiasts do today. Normaly they use three stones or some other method to get it off the ground to accomidate coals. THis one had built in legs. Really cool piece. Thanks for posting.

An accessory cover with antennae for remote control cooking?   I go along with what Troy says with it possibly being a griddle when sat on its legs.  Does the cover have a gate mark on the underside?  If not it may be a 20th century piece.  It's roughness makes me wonder if it was made by a recognized foundry or was homemade.  Very unique in any case.

After looking at it closely, may be a home made casting.  It's still a really cool piece.  Use it as a lid for a camp oven, or flip it over and use it as a griddle over a camp fire.   Really interesting piece, thanks for posting.

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.
