Unknown #6 griddle
« on: May 30, 2017, 10:51:21 AM »
I have only recently started collecting, and one piece I have is number 6 griddle with no markings except for the #6 on the bottom and what looks to be a casting mark or a gate mark. Interested to find out an estimated dating and price of this piece

Richard, can you post a couple of pictures? Top and bottom would help.

Also not yet cleaned and finished I picked these up a few days ago. Haven't found any markings yet but we shale see if any pop up after a good cleaning

Richard, what is the diameter of your griddle?
That 6 looks more like a 9.

Try to post photos of the backs of the trivets. That is where any markings are that would aid in identifying them. But those are both quite common.

Alright I will be cleaning them tomorrow so I will look closer at the backs  after cleaning.
And the diameter is 10 1/2" on the griddle. There looks to be a partial line Below the 6 is why I thought 6. Or is that a marking from the cast?

Yes it does have a crack. I still use this piece. This was my great grandparents griddle and I just recently brought it back to life!

Since it was your great grandparents griddle, and it is cracked, I would advise not using it if you want to keep it in one piece. I would display it and tell the story if someone asks. Cooking with a cracked pan, especially one with family history, is not advised. Repeated heating and cooling from cooking will eventually take its toll on that damaged piece.

Yes I had thought about that. And Russell since it measures 10 1/2", that does make it a #9 correct?

Yes, a #6 would be closer to 7" or 7 1/2" in diameter.

Alright!  Thank you. I've only just got started and didn't know if maybe older iron work had different sizes than now.

Also I've got the Trivets all cleaned up and there are no markings on them back or front. Is there a style pattern I could look up somewhere to find more details about them?? I've found a match to the eagle print of the one I have saying; 1949 military design. Is this accurate?

older iron work had different sizes than now.

It depends on how you define "now." Items like waffle irons and handled water pots did have some changing numbering schemes in the latter part of the 19th century. Round griddles seemed to be more like stove eyes with handles, so they followed standard stove eye sizes.

For the trivets, I doubt that you’ll be able to tie an unmarked trivet to a foundry. The 2 designs that you posted were reproduced by many companies like Wilton, John Wright, Lodge, JZH, Virginia Metal Crafters, Art Smithy, and that’s just off the top of my head.

Your photo IMG_1140 is called Eagle and Heart by collectors. Lodge called it Eagle Laurel Trivet.
Your photo IMG_1141 is called Oder of Cincinnati by collectors. Lodge called it Sunburst Trivet.
Trivet names aren’t too standardized as you can see.
