ashtray 0 560
« on: March 28, 2015, 08:54:02 PM »
I'm a novice.  I have an ashtray marked Griswold Cast Iron Skillet 0 Erie, Pa, USA 560.  It is polished around the top of the skillet and top of the handle and has a match holder.
I can not find a value listed any place - please help me.

Thanks!!

Hello David. Welcome to WAGS. I see you are from the great State of West Virginia. I'm from Ohio myself. And that ash tray, unless I am missing something and I don't think I am, its in the 15.00 to twenty dollar range. Now if you find a number one Griswold ashtray put it under your pillow for safe keeping. I bid 1500.00 on one one time and never got it.

Do you have a pic? The pn 560 zero ashtray is a hard/rare find if it's the real deal.

I agree with Ed. If it is the pn 560 zero, and not the pn 570 double zero, it is quite rare.

 Could you post a picture?

Hello David, and welcome to WAGS.  I agree with Mark & Ed, an ashtray as you described, is quite rare.  The best way for us to be able to help determine value would be based on condition. Pictures would be a great help. Show the entire back, and the top, including handle. I have one of these, and we are familiar with this piece. Not too many of these out there. If it's legit, that would be a real find! To give you an idea of what's available to our members information wise, these are pictures of the #0 ashtray. I have since cleaned the inside more. There were some repo's out there, this will give you an idea of what a real one looks like. I turned down a 2k offer for it.

Here are a couple of pictures of mine.  As you can see, it needs a bit of cleaning in the inside.  What's the best way to do this?
Thanks for the help.

A lye bath.

And that is one hard to find item.

Has anyone seen the 0 ash tray in black iron? I've seen one that was stripped and really looked good, but I'm wondering if they were all plated when they left the factory. I've only seen three or four but all were plated.

Harry, I have never seen one in black iron. Back in 2003-04, there were two sold at auction, I think it was in Maine. Said one was plated, one was black iron. Plated one brought good $$, and if I remember right, the black iron one brought big $$ (over 3k !)  I did not see the piece, so don't know if it was stripped or not. The link for the auction is no longer available- I should have copied it when I found it a few years ago. :-/
