Here's another that was a recent purchase. A #5 Griswold, would like to know its value.

Rick, is that a crack running across the bottom, and up the sidewall?
Does the pan sit flat with no warp or wobble?
These issues would all affect value (and/or pitting too). :)

No it has no cracks and it has a very slight wobble but it is no spinner. No pitting either

Looks like maybe a hair on the skillet or across the lens on the right side to me.  Book value $30-40 although the slant logos have been doing better of late.  Some of the references we're using for values Rick, and that you'll see mentioned in some of the other threads are the Blue Book-The Book of Griswold and Wagner, the Red Book--The Book of Wagner and Griswold and the Yellow Book--Griswold Muffin Pans.

The Blue Book has the most up to date info with the latest edition being published just a few years ago.  It focuses mainly on Griswold, then Wagner and a couple of the smaller refineries--Sidney, Favorite and Wapak.

The Red Book hasn't been updated as recently and primarily focuses on Wagner, then Griswold and Lodge, King/Martin, Excelsior/GF Filley and Vollrath.

I would suggest picking up a copy of the Blue Book to start. Our board moderator Greg Stahl and the PanMan, David Smith both have them available on their websites which you can reach from the links on the main WAGS page.

I should add that while the books do contain values, for better or worse, ebay is the most fluid market and most current indicator other than cast iron auctions of what values are closest to.

I have that skillet, #5 slant 724L, only mine has a 5 on the handle. I don't know much about how the pattern numbers work (you can add that to the list of things I don't know much about when it comes to cast iron ...), so I was wondering if they sometimes changed the design a little but used the same number?

I wouldn't have thought so given the definition of "pattern", but again, there's a lot I still don't know. I thought one 724L would look exactly the same as another. Not the case?

Karen, the design(s)/patterns seemed to have been constantly changing, (lettering, positions of the lettering, logo(Slant, Large Block, Small Block, EPU vs. ERIE, and on, and on...) The Pattern Numbers with Griswold remained more consistent, but sometimes would vary
.
The real eye opener when I started, was when I received my 'books'... Blue Book, Red Book, and Muffin Pan Books.  WOW... was that ever an eye opener, looking at just the various marking changes overtime, on just the skillets!  And then factor in the other multitudes of pieces.... groan.
That was when I groaned and muttered... what HAVE I GOTTEN myself into???  ;D ;D 8-) ::)

And then there is Wagner......... :o :o. And Lodge, and Favorite, and......

And the Variations of each type of the Griswold muffin pans. yikes.

Absolutely not as simple as it first appears, this 'Cast Iron Collectin' thing" :D
