Wapak Tailor's Iron and Sad Iron Trivet
« on: March 17, 2010, 08:52:33 PM »
Okay I found these today while I was visiting one of our newest WAGS, Gene, and now I want to know how much they might be worth because I don't have the faintest clue  :-/ :-/

I didn't even know Wapak made a Tailor's iron??  That is what I call it anyway.  I think that I say where Tom O. had posted about one but I can't remember.

The blue book lists them as pressing irons.   The larger ones bring some money.   The last one was around $100 if I remember right.    The trivet I don't think brought much.   Maybe $20.

Nice item.   I don't think I have the 12#  I think mine is 14#????   Make nice door stops. ;D

Will 8-)

Thanks Will!!

I saw the one in the BB but this iron does not look like what they call a pressing iron??  It looks identical to the Lodge Tailor's iron in the RB.  I would have to assume they are one and the same name??

I think you are right about them making a nice door stop!  Might not be a bad idea if I decide to keep it.

Were they plated or was this one painted??

Jeff, if you decide not to sell it, you could take a torch and cut the handle off, and then grind the letters down smooth, and then you could used it for a small portable anvil for your workshop table. Or you could sell it to the Amish to use for a hitching iron for their horses, so you got all kind of possibilities there. ;) ::)

Tom Oen is gonna cry when he hears that Perry.  ;) I think he may be looking for one of those. Send Him a PM Jeff. If your gonna part with it that is.

I do know that they made plated irons, but I don't know about painted ones. Tom would know for sure.

Jeff, I just noticed your post on the #14 Wapak tailor iron. The following is in the Reproo Wapak catalog and price list. The iron you have is a tailor iron, It is narrower than the pressing iron. This is what is printed in the catalog: Wapak Sad Irons  Each style is made in two grades: Plain and nickel plated. Both grades have aluminum painted tops and are so shippedunless otherwise ordered. The tailor irons were made in sizes 12,14 16 18 20 222 24 28 and 30 #, Prices were : Plain $0.09 per pound and nickel plates were $0.10.5 .The pressing irons were 14,16,18,20,22,24, and 30# I have a 12 tailor iron and a 14 and 24 pressing iron plus all the household sizes. Some people painted them.If you are going to cut and grind it down as Perry said I will get you a piece of railroad iron. I would price yours around $125-150. May I ask what state or city you found it. I think the larger ones are the hardest to find.

Tom is correct on the sizes of the Wapaks.  I have been TRYING for years to put a set together and so far have only the #12,14,16.  I have seen an 18 and a 20.  The 18went for $300. and the 20 was $200., both on ebay awhile back.  Needless to say, I was the underbidder on both of them.

Hi John, Do you collect all sizes of Wapak sad irons or just the large ones? I had a friend point out something about the 'household" size,1-10,12 that I was not aware of. He pointed out that the WAPAK on top of the handle is not always turned the same way; I have several irons that way. it looks like the curves were bent so they would fit either way. Check yours and let me know.  Thanks   Tom

Hi tom,  Yes, I have 1-10 and the sleeve iron also.  I will check on them as I never thought about the Wapak being turned.

Thank you guys for the info!!  You guys know better than to think that I am going to destroy this iron  ;)  I think Perry might have been trying to be funny (which I thought he was by the way).

Tom, Gene, one of our newest members, pointed this one out to me in an antique mall in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.  The price was very very good so I picked it up.  I am sure that this one was was originally nickle plated as there is still plating in the grooves of the handle.

I was thinking of maybe selling this one buy now that you guys talk about how hard they are too find I might just have to hang on to it and see if I can find any more??  Sounds like it might be a real challenge!!

Jeff, I know Perry was just joking. But do you have any other Wapak sad irons? Like #1 thru.#10 ,12. If so check the WAPAK on top of the handle to see if WAPAK runs the same way  on all of them. Jeff, I have 21 Wapak sad irons of "household" size, 1-10,12 and on 13 of them WAPAK runs one way and on the other 8 it runs the other way. So I ended up not having a complete set of either. The 24 # I got was used as a flower shop door stop for years in Maine.   Tom

Tom this is my very first Wapak iron of any kind!!  I remember that darn Chuck Rogers saying that the Wapak could run either way on these irons!!  From the ones that I have seen this was just a placement issue on the same series of Wapak irons.  Like someone else mentioned the handle can be divided directly in half and both sides would be the same excluding the lettering.

So Tom I still think you have the complete set you just have more to look for!!!

Jeff, glad to see that the iron is turning out to be something interesting.  With all that stuff out there maybe I need to go back out and dig around.  Just for your info I'm going to list that slant #9 tonight, around 7pm our time.  It was a pleasure meeting you the other day.  If everyone is half as nice, I know I will be a life long member (if I'm allowed).

I remember that conversation Tom. You had sent pics of an iron that you had, and I mentioned the logo was backwards on the one that I had,  as compared to your. Do you know if it was just that size iron, or are there others like that? I've only seen a few other houshold irons, but wasn't able to pick them up. Bids went way too high at that auction.

Jeff   I have some other irons I am unable to find any info on. There are clubs that only collect sad irons but you must join before they will tell you anything. If you find a scource for info, let me know.   Tom

Well I must say I don't know the going rate of Wapak household irons but I have seen several in the $30-40 range that looked in average condition and I passed on them.  I might have to start pricing irons if I can even find the darn things.  I don't see too many but when I do it seems like I see them in multiples.  Makes me think that there was some place in that town that sold Wapak items.

Chuck  The duplicates I have with the WAPAK turned are #4 thru #8. There may be more but that is what I have at present. I have 13 irons one way and 8 the other. I have some other brands i am trying to find info on without having to join another club.   Tom
