Electrolysis Stubborn Seasoning
« on: July 03, 2016, 11:33:56 PM »
I use electrolysis for all of my cast iron restoration, and every now and then I have a pan that has some really stubborn spots of old seasoning. I'll leave it in the tank for a day, all of the old seasoning will just fall right off, but then there will be small little spots left that seems to want to hold on a bit harder.

I've had just two pans every that the seasoning just never wanted to come off.

Anyone else ever experience this? Or have some tips on getting these last few spots to let go? Thanks

Clay, I always do Lye Bath before Electro.. keeps the electro running 'mean and clean'.  :)

That said, what I have found is those annoying black spots usually are harboring bad rust underneath.

During scrub down with cold water after electro, I keep a spray bottle of white vinegar handy and give a little squirt on the 'black spot', let sit for about 2 minutes, then scrub with SS scrubby under running cold water.  Watch the color of the rinse water.  Usually a reddish hue will show.

Back to the electro, and then scrub again.
The downside is,,, usually that black spot will eventually reveal a bit o pitting.... :'( :'(  Now you have successfully pried a 'secret' outta me!   ;D
