Refresh my lye tank or start over
« on: March 23, 2016, 08:03:06 AM »
Hey all, Ive been away for a while. Plus I think I purchased most if not all the CI in my part of the world.  Things have really dried up the last year or so

I have a Rubbermaid tub I use for my Lye tank. I set it up about 3 years ago. It worked fine.  Back at Thanksgiving a friend of mine gave me a couple skillets that he wanted cleaned up, no hurry. I put them in the tank and forgot about them. A couple months went by I pulled them out surprised to see most of the buildup was still on them (normal grease, etc).  I figured it would rinse right off, but the SS scrubber didn't really faze it.  I don't know the life span of a lye tank but mine obviously has stopped working.  Is it OK to mix a few more gallons of fresh up and add it to what I've got, maybe to re energize it?  Or do I need to dump it and start over fresh.  The tank is in my garage.  This was during the winter but my furnace is out there and the garage stays around 55 degrees all winter. I know that slows it down but I still think it should have been working.

I would start with a new solution. The one you have doesn't seem to be working at all. Why dilute new lye with old ineffective stuff?

Yep, every once in awhile it is best to start with a fresh batch.
