Before and After share :) My first post!!
« on: June 26, 2015, 06:58:28 PM »
I thought I would share a before and after of 2 skillets.  Thanks to WAGs for all the info (I feel like my head is going to explode with all the info! lol) and my sister Mia Fraas who helped walk me through a few things during seasoning using Facetime.  :)
Well like a dummy, I forgot to take before pics, but remembered after I pulled them out of the oven after "self clean method" a couple weeks ago. After scrubbing away, I still wasn't satisfied with results......Then came my hubby to the rescue and he built me a little electrolysis keg.
So in went the 2 skillets, one at a time. They came out great, removed the little rust and extra gunk that I couldn't get off previously. Today was seasoning day! I used Spectrum refined Canola Oil spray. We had Pam, but I wanted to try something without the extra additives (hubby uses Pam to cook). I was going to try Grape seed oil like Cheryl Watson suggests, but my store didn't have it. Anyways, 2 seasonings, a few mishaps; 500 degrees is really hot! and a really stinky kitchen, hahaha......and Tada! I am super happy how they turned out! Now to get cooking in these babies! Thanks for looking, any comments or suggestions, and again, thanks for all who contribute and share your knowledge!!

Now I know Mia is lurking here... somewhere.... :) :)

When handling the hot iron, I use folded terry cloth dish towels.

Hello Tina. I agree with Sandy here. You did a fabulous job. I'm impressed. :o

Do you and your husband make house calls? I could use a LOT of results like that.  ;D :)

Is your electro tank a stainless steel beer keg that has had the top cut out, I like the idea of using the keg as the anode the question I have is does the removed rust etc stick to the sides/bottom of the tank or does it just drop and lay in the bottom as a silt layer.

I use a pair of silicone oven mitts, they are padded cloth with a silicone covering and have nubbies to help grip the iron when handling

Hello Valerie. Thats a very good question. And yes, the rust that comes off of the piece goes to and sticks on the anode. Thats one of the reasons I don't use a barrel but rather sheets of SS hanging on each side of the piece to be cleaned. This way you can take the sheets out and clean them very easily and you can just turn them to the other side, so you get two cleans out of the pieces before you have to clean off the rust. And on the SS sheets its easy to clean off buy using a SS scrubbie. A few minutes with that and you are good to go all over. SO, I don't use a barrel, but I have some.

Thank you Sandy, Perry and Jim!!  Again, everyone's experiences and knowledge shared here has really helped tremendously!   Valerie, Perry answered the your question and honestly,  I can't tell yet what is going on inside yet, but assume it's going on sides and bottom of barrel. So I am glad he provided the info.  I don't have a lot of CI pieces to clean, and we had the keg laying around here already and just had a friend remove the top (he's a welder).    I will take some pics when I clean it out and report back :)

Nice work. I have 2 pairs of welding gloves, the heat sometimes gets through them.

Excellent restoration work, Tina.  It looks like you have a future in this  8-)

A few things.  Like Robert, I have 2 pairs of welder's gloves. One pair is rated to 550F and some heat still gets through but it isn't major.  The other pair is rated to 900F, the problem with them is they are bulky and you have little if any dexterity so I only use them when I'm only moving stuff around in the oven.

Second, you get used to the smell in the kitchen.  It is sort of an occupational hazard.
