Griswold #8 rust or no?
« on: May 27, 2015, 12:58:31 AM »
Hello everyone! I found this skillet with an awesome lid in decent shape...looks real to me...from the 20's ish I think based on what I've read??. I have stripped it, cleaned off rust, and already put on 2 new coats of seasoning. When I took it out of the oven I just noticed this weird spot that looks like it may or may not be rust?  I don't want to strip it and start over if I don't have to but I will. What do you guys think?

Looks like it could just be some variation in the iron color. I don't see rust. What did you season it with?

It looks like discoloration to me too. I just didn't know if that was a possibility. Seasoned with crisco

I don't know I'm still nervous. It looks more and more like rust the more I season it?  What do yall think?  Still ok?

I have seen variations in the color of a skillet or other utensil after a few rounds of seasoning.  It seems to depend on several factors.  I doubt you are seeing rust, but if it would make you feel better, strip it back down and start over.  My advice is to not worry about it and just use it.
Hold still rabbit so I can dunk you in this bucket of lye!

That needs to be stripped back to bare metal and start again. It is a nice 8 and should clean up fine.

Chance, IMO, if it was residual oxidation/rust, those spots would be dark, really dark gray/blackish.

There may be something else that did not get removed completely.

How did you 'strip' the skillet? (method)

So I stripped it with the oven cleaner method. Sprayed those suckers down with easy off and let it sit in a trash bag for a couple days. Seemed to work well...but maybe it didn't quite get everything?
After that I lightly scrubbed with #0000 Steel wool. Then soaked in half water half vinegar. Scrubbed that with the steel wool. Washed with soap really good. Started reseasoning.

What kind of easy off oven cleaner?  Did it contain lye?

(Many do not).

I would try a re-strip, and pick up some SS Scrubbies...

Oven cleaner can take up to 7 days to get at everything...

The 0000 steel wool is good... for polishing, so I'd set that aside.

If you are planning on doing more pieces, consider setting up a Lye Bath... it will be way cheaper and clean many, many pieces....

Good thoughts. I will try some of that stuff. The full lye bath seems a little intimidating but maybe it's time to try
