This was a riskey buy, seller did not know this was a makers mark pan. It was so grime covered they used salt to display the Erie logo and the four dots I was able to make out. The pan was also sprayed twice in the interior with spray paint, first with green then with black.

A multitude of potential issues existed, did anyone use high grit sandpaper or wire wheel on this prior to each painting and then how to get the paint off safely and have this be a food safe restoration if even possible? I tested three paint removers on the handle and no dice. Thus, having a very small wood burning fireplace insert with fan blower, I did controlled temperature burn off of the paint and look at the shiny surface beneath!

Here is the makers mark, streak is just water and lighting before seasoning phase.

Eric, painted pieces are always a big risk!

Helpful hint:  ZIP STRIP with MC, to strip the toughest of paints, then scrub down and then into the lye bath, etc.

If you are going to use it, I would still recommend lead testing.. :)

Cheryl, dumb question I'm sure, but what is Zip Strip with MC.? I tried to find it, but was unsure exactly which product that is. I have a pan that appears to be painted, and assuming it passes a lead test, I want to make sure that I am using a food safe product. Any help would be appreciated. Alternatively, should I just toss it in my lye tank?

Trisha, this is Zip Strip:

http://www.recochem.com/us/products/zip_strip_paint_finish_removers/zip_strip_premium_paint_finish_remover

The MC is Methylene Chloride which is an important component to a stripper's effectiveness, IMO.  There are many newer strippers that do not contain MC nowadays.  Must be used in well ventilated area... I usually apply it outdoors, then place in a sealed plastic box.

It is water soluble....

After I strip a piece it gets a complete scrub down in hot soapy water, and then goes into the lye bath and then the electro.

I am getting ready to strip a piece right now... it was in the lye bath for 4 days, and while quite a bit of paint was removed, it still needs the Zip Strip.

Zip Strip itself is not food safe, but after the rigorous regimen I put a piece through after stripping, I do not have concerns...
