Overpay
« on: November 21, 2016, 10:30:06 PM »
Did you ever have one of those pieces that you overpaid for because the books aren't necessarily accurate, Then when cleaning it, it turns out worse than you expected?  I bought a Griswold #22 corn bread gem pan at an auction. I soaked in lye for a while, then electrolysis. Scrubbed like hell, then seasoned. I wasn't happy with the looks, so back in the lye, scrubbed again, then in vinegar, then electro again. I finally seasoned it again, and it looks ok, but coloration is not even, has some dark spots. I'm trying to give it away on ebay, because I just don't want to look at it anymore. Hopefully someone will bid before it ends.

Gary, I think most of us have overpaid for a piece based on one of the treatises and then it didn't season as well as we expected.  I treat my cast iron like I treat my dogs: I love them all 8-)

Acquired a HUGE BS&R d/o years ago that just made me foam at the mouth. After DAYS in the electro and lye, found it had been spray painted with red oxide primer that turned to a sticky mess at best. :-/ :'(
