Quality metal spatula/turner that won't break the bank.
« on: June 06, 2016, 12:49:31 PM »
We have a handful of the plastic and silicone varieties, but I would like to pick up a nice metal spatula for use in the cast iron skillets.  What is a decent brand to pick up that won't break the bank?  Any certain things to look for?  Features, sharp, dull, square corners, round corners?

I think that will be up to your personal preference, I like heavy duty commercial type stainless Steel, here is a picture of just a few of what I use.  I found them at a kitchen supply store at factory outlets, reasonable cost.

On one of my other non-cast iron sites most of the iron guys swear by this one, it will take rough abuse and hold up well. A little pricey but their motto is buy it once and cry once.

Google turned this one up on ar15.com. For $15, I think I'm gonna have to try it out.   I was expecting recommendations in the $50 range.   Lol.  $15 is merely a drop in the bucket for a tool that will potentially last 20 or more years.   Hopefully I get it for father's day. :)

Tommy, that was the place I see it mentioned. There are quite a few cast iron guys there and enjoy the old cast to cook in. I had seen them mentioned quite a number of times. And they always gave them high marks.

Like any tool that is going to see serious use, I live by the "Buy once, cry once" motto as well.  Whether it is tools for work, for home, cooking, firearms, knives, whatever.   If it is going to see serious use, I will gladly pay for quality.

Tommy, I use commercial grade stainless steel spatulas from a kitchen supply store.  I have several different sizes.  They have fairly bulky plastic-type handles.  They cost the princely sum of $6.56, $7.86 and $9.29.  They are thin but strong steel spatulas, excellent for cutting and serving lasagnas and other other casserole type dishes.  I highly recommend them, but they didn't have a name.

Estate sales and flea markets have supplied me with untold numbers of kitchen utensils [smiley=thumbsup.gif] Found a Cutco spatula just last weekend that was practically NEW for $1. See a good many Dexter and Robinsons as well. ALL DOMESTIC MADE! Same with quality kitchen knives and forks. Just have to dig and look :o

Don't laugh, but I use the OXO lasagna turner. I liked it better than most of the other spatulas I've seen.

No laughing here.   Our best turner is currently an OXO brand all plastic one.   It is nice and sturdy, just plastic.   I am pretty sure I am going with the dexter for the time being.   If it doesn't show up for father's day, I will be ordering it shortly after.   ;D

I totally agree with Duke here. At flea markets and garage sales you can find excellent pieces for the kitchen. I have an excellent Dexter commercial spatula that I keep handy and like to use. I have either three or five dollars for it. I pick up nice pieces like that and give them to friends.

Well, my father's day gift came in yesterday.  It was a blue book and a Dexter pancake turner.  Man, the difference between a thin stainless turner and a big bulky plastic turner is night and day.  I am sold on stainless utensils now for sure.    I hope to never have to use one of those plastic jobs again.  Lol
