Original series Wagner
« on: October 13, 2015, 02:37:36 PM »
I came across this pan yesterday (in photo). From my research it is a 1890's series "block letter" Wagner. The finish on the cooking surface is glass smooth and appears to be authentic. This is my first "collectible" pan, I use a lodge pan on a daily basis and love it, but am very excited to now have this pan. What is this value of this type of pan? From all my research I can't find any original Wagners like this for sale. Mostly they are all the "curved block letter" and then the Wagner Sydney 0s and then of course the modern ones. Any more information on this pan and its approx value?

The other side after I cleaned it up and seasoned it.

Hello Ryan. Welcome to WAGS. I see you are from the famous Horse Shoe Curve area of the former Pennsylvania Railroad, now Norfolk Southern.

And you are correct that is an old skillet. What size is it? That will determine value. That inside sure does look slick. You did a nice job cleaning it up.  :)

Perry, click on the pic of the bottom. You can clearly see an 8 on it.

Looks like it has an 8 on it, Perry. Very nice skillet Ryan. Did the bottom clean up as well as the top? If so and no wobble or warpage issues, I would keep it if I couldn't get 100.00 for it.

edit..oops, looks like Claudia beat me to it by a couple mins, ha.

Thank you Claudia.  :)

I keep forgetting one can click on that icon and it will show another picture. I keep ASSUMING that the icon is just the same picture that is posted. So after I clicked on the icon it took me some serious looking but I did find the eight. As for my opinion of what that piece is worth, around fifty dollars.

Thanks for the response. Yes I am from Altoona, here is a view of the horseshoe curve that isn't very often seen. (A trail that follows the tracks up and around the mountain, and is not part of the "tourist area"). And yes the bottom of the pan cleaned up well, not quite as well as the cooking surface but I only used elbow grease and rough pads so far. Going to put it in a lye bath soon and do it up completely. I did it quick to use it in a camping trip I just got back from. Worked great.

Perry, I don't click on the icon. I click on the pic itself. Opens up a larger pic as an overlay to the same tab, not in a new tab.

Thank you again Claudia. I didn't know that either.  :)

Claudia, now are you a good cook, and can you keep house, can you can foods, can you skin squirrels, and how are you at cleaning fish, and I mean fillet them, and not leave no bones in the fillets, and can you chop wood, and do you like to fish, and have you got a boat, and if so, what size and make is it, and what size is the motor, OH, and can you bait your own hook? And if you are married, are you happily married? There is a difference you know.  :-/ ;D ;D ;D

I'm a good cook. I keep house as clean as it needs to be. I don't can or skin squirrels. I can clean fish, bait a hook and I used to like to fish. If I have to, I can chop wood. No boat. Married and happily, will be 19 years next month.
Now, how about you? Oh and do you ride horses? Love animal companions?

Hello Claudia. I figured you might respond to this in kind.  ;D

Well lets see, I can cook, and I too clean house as good as it needs to be, and I can't can foods, but I admire people who do, and I can skin squirrels, or anything else for that matter, all day long, not a problem, and I can clean fish, quite well actually, and yes I bait my own hook, and I can and have chopped PLENTY PLENTY PLENTY of wood, and I don't have a boat, and I have owned and ridden and hauled a few horses, and cattle too, but I have not been in the saddle for a long time, but I still like horses, and I like to smell a nice clean horse barn, the smell of leather, horses, fresh hay, clean straw, and I have been divorced over ten years. Was married 24 years. That about sums me up. And I like to clean old number eight Wagner skillets, with a heat ring, in the wood shed, when my heart is lonely.  :-/ ;D ;D ;D

I suggest that this topic be moved to a new thread titled:
LONELY HEARTS IN THE WOOD SHED.

I think Wright may have hit the heart of this thread...
