Just joined this group
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:31:37 PM »
I just joined your group and I am hoping someone can help me find information on Fair Day & Klyne Cast Iron. I have a large 3 legged pan and top marked:
12 ½ ‘’ Spider & Lid      (with lid)      FAIR DAY & DeKLYNE- KNOXVILLE. TENN.-
(Civil War era? If so …over 150 years old) (rare?)

Can someone help me identify and value this piece. I was very afraid to clean it and finally let it go through my self cleaning oven where it is now cooling.

Welcome to WAGS Jackie, when you get it cleaned up can you post a few pics? Both sides of both pieces including the handle...thanks. Fair, Day & DeKlyne was established in Knoxville in 1880 by Fair and Day. So your spider would have been made some time after that...and after the civil war.

Mark,
Thank you for the welcome. I recently found over over 20 cast iron pieces in the back of a garage where my husband must have placed them years ago. I only have a partial list so far and I will work on cleaning them as time permits. Here is a partial list so far. Any help in identifying them as to what they are and any value I should know about would be appreciated. I have no idea how to post photos of the first lot I removed so far.

Wow, now that's quite a find, Jackie. There are some interesting items there for sure. Nothing jumps out as super valuable, but collectively you've got some money there. Condition will make quite a difference too. If you can get pics onto your computer, you can attach them here by clicking the Browse button under the smilies, then select your file. You can post up to 3 pics at a time..click the Attachments plus sign and Browse again to your file. File sizes can't be bigger than 250 kb. You should probably look at this thread here for more info:

Jackie, resizing pictures depends on what photo software you are using... and whether on a computer or other device.

Or, just click in my email button below this post, and send the pics to me.. I can resize them.

Cheryl,
I clicked on your Email and sent 4 pictures. I got them into Picasa and have no idea what to do from there so I emailed them to you. These are the cast iron pieces I found in the back of the garage. There are a few more that I have no pictures of at this time.

Please let me know if they come through and thank you for any help you can give me in identifying and finding the value of the pieces.

Jackie

Pictures received. They are all quite small, and should be able to be uploaded with no problems.

No resizing required of the files I received.

Cheryl,
There a few more items that have yet to be photographed...

Thank you for uploading them. I tried 3 times and received a message each time saying the file was too big. I have no idea why.

Is there a way from the list I sent above to find out more about these items including value.

I would also like to find out more about Fair Day & DeKlyne in Knoxville, TN and the pan that is pictures above.

If I am reading the forum correctly...members have to pay to  have to pay to access a private area to find out about manufacturers. Is this right? I can not afford to pay for a membership as I am raising grand children on SSI. Is there another way to find out this kind of information?

Jackie

Jackie, it is possible that your email program is shrinking the files... hard to say.

If you read thru the link Mark posted above, I try to cover several different types of software for resizing pictures.

Re: Fair, Day & DeKlyne , the information on this foundry is very limited.

We know they existed in Knoxville, Tenn, 1880 - 1890, and that is about it.  Tennessee has not yet made historical corporation records available online, so maybe someday soon we will learn more, but for now that is about it.

As you photograph your items, be sure to frame the entire top of the item, including the handle(s), and the entire bottom of the item including the handle.
Good pictures are critical to identifying a piece.  We look at the markings and much more.  :)

Cheryl is right, Jackie..information on Fair, Day & Deklye is very limited. It's not like they were a big player..just one of hundreds of small foundries in that period. Your best bet with a spider like that , if you're looking to sell it, is ebay. A large spider w/ lid could be attractive to the camp oven/charcoal enthusiasts...as well as the other spider skillets you found. Old doesn't necessarily equate with value..you have to hope there's someone out there that would like to own it. And there probably is.. if it's in decent condition.  ;)
