Perry: I'm 71, born in 1943. We got a phone when I was about 10 or 11. It had no dial, just plain. It was a 4 party line. Our number was 671-J1. You pick up the receiver and an operator comes on and says "number please", you tell her the number and she connects you. Just a history lesson for some of our younger readers. C B

We, too, had a four-party line.  Our number was 536-M and my Dad's work number was 296-J.  (I wish I could remember where I put my car keys like I can remember those numbers!)

When we moved to a house with "modern facilities" we got a private line.  My sisters and I thought we were in heaven because we could use the phone without the neighbors listening in.

Oh my!  Our first phone was a two party line, our number was 0492J in Riverside CA.  We also had the wall phone in the kitchen.

We had a 4 party line too when I was a kid. The lady next door was always on the phone yakking and we could hardly ever use it.
Sorry for the hijack ;) ;D

Yes, but I'm glad they're memories and not a reality in today's world.  I've never been one to long for the good old days.

Hey Mike, sounds like your phone was more upscale than mine. It was paper cups and string here!
