Griswold "Erie" 739 with "Ghost" mark

I know about the griddle but I've not seen one with the "ghost" logo. Any ideas?

[size=12]I have a bailed 741 size 12 that has no cross-and-circle logo at all on it, but has a ghost of one at 6:00 (with only the p/n and the word "Griswold" itself actually cast into the iron, logo-less) and another ghost due center, if memory serves.  It also has a ghost of x-reinforcement, but no actual x-reinforcement.  It's got more ghosts than a condemned sanitarium, frankly.  I also have a 776 size 10 that somebody buffed within an inch of its life that I believe has a central logo with the cross, but also has a ghost at another position.

If the spirit moves me, I'll photo and post my ghosts for you.  (Pun initially unintended, but instantly embraced.)  Because of software issues, photographing and posting involves three sessions between two computers for me, so I don't do a whole lot of it, and the griddles are put away in storage containers right now.  But I'll probably have a few photos similar to yours for you to look at in a couple of days.

As far as ideas go... the obvious ones, I guess.  They went back and forth with where they wanted to put the logos and whether or not to use x-reinforcement.  But I can't back that supposition up with any production stats or third-party rumors.  I'm just grasping at ghosts, like you.

The Ghosties are patterns that were re-worked for continued use, and illustrate the changing of designs, logo placement etc.

I think the ghosties are neat, as they help us figure out the progressions of markings on pieces. (ie, which came first, then another, then another...) and assists in dating pieces.

Patterns were expensive, and were not necessarily "replaced".... but redone and kept in use.

[size=12]Well, there weren't quite as many ghost marks on my griddles as I thought there were last night when I posted, and the ones that were there didn't necessarily photograph too well.  But, here's what I have, anyway.

First is a 739 just like yours, with a center ghost in the same place.

Second picture is a logo-less 741 bailed size 12 with a ghost of the circle-cross Griswold logo around the word "Griswold" and a ghost of an X-reinforcement.  I thought that this also had a center ghost of a circle-and-cross logo, but I was mistaken.  Turns out I saw that arrangement of ghosts on a 776 size 10 griddle pictured in the red book, not on any actual piece that I own.  But, this 741 still does have two ghosts.

Third is a picture of a very shiny 776 bailed size 10 that actually has a ghost logo at 6:00 and a ghost x-reinforcement, but it's got such an albedo that neither of them photographed very well.  If you're holding the piece and looking at it with your own two eyes, they're both apparent.  In the photo, they're almost invisible.

I imagine that the pattern used to cast the 776 probably started life as a pattern for a 740 size 10 handle griddle.  There are also casting artifacts along the sides of the griddle that make me think that they removed a handle from a handled pattern to make a perfectly round bailed griddle.  But, once they went from a handled griddle with an X-reinforcement to a bailed griddle with a ring reinforcement, they wound up moving the logo and getting two ghosts.
