Gem Pans

I found these two pans and was wondering if they look like the real McCoy or not. They are asking $10 each. The one with no handle looks like the Heart Star Gem Pan on page 119 of Blue Book. Can't seem to find one with a handle.

Well,  to be real they have to have good markings.   That H&S would be the #50 if it was real.   There would be a #50 on top of the handle,  and I don't see it.   Here is my "repro"  that I just picked up.   The seller thought it was a repro,  but it is not.

Uh, it looks like a repro to me too Will.  ::)

Now that beats all I have ever seen, USUALLY, you got the seller tellin you its real when its fake, and here, leave it to Will, to find the other way around. Alright Will, how much did you give for it. We want to know.  ;D

Gary,  $10 for either one is still not bad if not marked.   I have two just like your top picture just because I picked them up cheap.   They are nice wall hangers.


Perry,  the seller said he has one in iron but didn't bring it this time.   I told him to bring it next time I will be there.   Paid him and walked away.   I didn't even see the word  "repo"  that he put on the tag.   I bet he thought he got a "sucker" when I paid him.   It was a good buy.

There are 3 or 4 variations of the alum 100 and the 50. All do not have the #100 and #50 on them, some have No. 802 or No.801 on the back and on the handle. 801 being the 50, 802 the 100.
 Gris cast alum bulletin No. A-15 shows them marked with 801 and 802, and no mention of the numbers 100 or 50..

Why so many variations for something that seems like they made little of?    We need a variation chart for these gem pans. ;D

John Hausslers Griswold Muffin Pan book lists only one variation of each of the 100 and the 50 Heart Star Muffin pans.

Mine looks the same Ed. And it has the "No 802" on the front of the handle.


I didn't look at your second picture Ed. I forgot that you have an Advanced Degree in picture postin.  ;)

SO, mine looks like Eds, front and back.

Pic from ebay.. This pan has 100 on the handle. I won't post it cuz it's a fuzzy pic.
 Perry, the muffin book is talking iron pans I do believe..

No question in my mind that both are modern, I'm not sure if repro is the right term small item though.

The top one is most likely made by the John Wright foundry in the 70's.  If you look, the Griswold pan has 5 pointed stars, these are 6 pointed.  They are very common, usually unmarked or it might have a number of the form 31-151, or just the letters JW, or even just a number 1 or 2.  .  $10 is not that much, but not a bargain.  I think they sold for around $3.00 new.  I think it was an original design for them.

I've been looking for a real heart star handled pan for many years.  I finally quite buying them if I can't hold it first because so many US and offshore repros are around.  If it doesn't have a clear gate mark (or sprue mark), I don't consider it an original.  Again, $10 is not a bargain, but not too much.  I've been looking for one of these because you find it in the early Andresen Catalog but I've never seen one.  If one is found I would expect it to have either his name or the AA & Co letters on it.

Never found one for myself.  Never seen any I'd attribute to Andresen.  I did see an unmarked one sell a while back on eBay that did have a gate mark and little nubbin feet.  Looked old.  I didn't get it - it sold for a lot.

  I'll start looking at these to see if a nice one turns up. I thought maybe they all were repros. If I see one marked AA, I'll drop you a PM. ;)
