Old DO I.D. -- need to find replacement.
« on: March 05, 2014, 07:28:37 PM »
Can anyone help identify this Camp / Chuck Wagon DO?  Both halves are gate marked. No identifying marks other than 12 on the lid and 12 IN. on the bottom.  The lid is the good part.  I would like to find a new bottom (perhaps just sell the lid). Someone attempted to weld a large section along the bottom edge but a large crack covers most of the bottom.  The bail was twisted and bent. I removed it and straightened it with a rubber mallet -- not positive about the original shape but I think I have it pretty close.
Thanks for any information you may have.

Cheryl, I believe/hope I have figured out the picture sizing issue. If so I will PM you. If not, sorry to cause you more work.

Dave

Can you put the lid on the oven and do a pic of the side view? The bail I wouldn't worry to much about, many of the old CO did not have a bail.

Thanks for taking a look Dwayne.  I pulled the lid back out of the lye bath.  It seems to be cleaning up well.  Here are a few pix --

The lid does overhang the bottom a bit and I can see the bail would need some tweeking.  But the lid fits quite nicely -- little slop and no rocking...

Dave it may be a few more days for me to really check out your CO. Can you also measure the diameter of the oven? You might go down to the Lodge section, and check out all the info on Camp Ovens. I have an idea, but want to be sure. Sorry, but things have been kinda crazy here!

Thanks Dwayne, no rush.  I will check out the Lodge history as you suggested.
The measurements you asked for (and some you didn't):

Inside diameter = 11 3/8 inches

Outside diameter = 12 1/16 inches

Inside depth = 3 3/4 inches

Outside (not including legs) = 4 inches

Other than being abused, neglected, and now ruined, the inside cooking surface was obviously very nice at one time.  Much smoother than some of the other gate marked items I have seen.

I'm thinking that the lid is Lodge, not as sure about the oven, that'll take some research yet. I'm also hoping that Some of the other guys who like COs will sound off.

In one picture it looked like the lid fit pretty good but in the other ones you could tell it was a little large for the DO. I also think the lid is a nice old Lodge lid, but have no clue on the bottom.

Thank you Rick and Dwayne.  Because of the gate mark on both the lid and the oven, I had not considered that this was a marriage rather than a matched set.
Looks like I am on the hunt for an old Lodge #12 Oven to make a set.  Anybody know of one available?
