Flop Griddle

This weekends find a flop griddle like the Griswold on page 62 of green book.  This one has in raised letters on bottom Pat Jan 25 1881 SMFG Co New york. Casting very good.  Anyone ever heard of this company?  Didn't see it listed in our foundry list.  Any value?

Marilyn  :)

Hi Marilyn,

S. MFG. Co., New York is in the foundry list for flop griddles. They are really neat looking. Great find! I don't know anything about the foundry.

Regards,
Charles

I don't know about the company but do have one.  Nice casting quality.  Not to uncommon either.  A few similiar ones are marked C. Mfg. Co. and Chicago I think.  Value around $25 to 75?

I recently happened up on one of these S. MFG. CO. flop griddles out in the territory (they're asking $45.00).

As Maryilyn stated, it bears a general rememblance to the ERIE example at the top of pg. 62 in the BB.

It's in nice shape, but at some point someone painted it flat black.

Looks like it'd be a blast to cook with - a real charmer - cranking out flapjacks approx. the size of a digital disc.

Does anyone have an idea what one of these in good condition is currently worth, and, is anyone cooking with one . . .?

Hi Terry. I think $45 is is a good price, most I see are double that price.
I do not use one, but have seen them in action, and it's a pretty slick set up.

Hi Ed.

Thanks much for the info; this is one of those that's had me muttering to myself from the time I walked away from it.

Now I'm wondering whether it would fit up OK atop a two-burner CI stove - that'd be a real fun setup - if the stove is wide enough to support it and is able to distribute heat fairly evenly. It'd be redundant, but would a long griddle balance everything out . . .? I'm trying to visualize how all that'd look!

Yea, I think a griddle would be necessary on a two burner hot plate for the very reason you stated ' distribute heat evenly' and the hot plate alone would not be large enough to flop the paddles open, and keep them heated, they would flop past the stove and be at a 90 degree angle. Be tough to put batter in them. ;) Need the width of the flop griddle when opened to find a suitable long griddle.

Once these get going it is cool. Fill the paddles, brown that side, flop it to the griddle, open it, fill up with batter and keep cooking.

Theres one of these on ebay and with shipping I believe it's darn close to $45, and it's not all that nice.

The one on ebay sold, and would have been $44.96 shipped to me. I was wrong on the condition. After really checking out the pix, it was well used and not abused.

Thanks again Ed.

I'm gonna go back for the S. MFG. and take it from there.

Before discovering this thread, I did see the one on eBay and it was cast in Chicago, rather than New York, so it was great to subsequently read where Steve Stephens mentioned the Chi-town examples. WAGS knows!
