The spout was actually very neatly removed. I have no idea why. Maybe it was broken at one time, and the owner decided to "fix" it. Actually a very nice job was done. I have an idea. I could put some clock works in it with the little chains hanging out of the hole where the spout used to be.  ;D  Maybe add a little hole for a cookoo to pop out.  :D

I'm in the process of doing that myself.  I had a square skillet that was dropped.  Broke the handle off it.  I'm going to actually cut and sand the rest of the handle off.  I may leave it as is, and use it as a baking skillet.  BUT, I may trip it and sand, then make a clock out of it to hang on the wall in the kitchen.  Not sure yet.

Funny, just this weekend I found this Wagner skillet in a pile of junk for sale. At first glance I thought to myself how the heck did that pan get so badly damaged, you would have had to throw the thing out of an airplane! Then I picked it up out of curiosity and saw that it was intentional. What would you use to get such a presice cut on cast iron?

By the way, my girlfriend told me I muttered something about cast iron in my sleep the other night. ;D

Nice #7 Griswold plate there Michelle.  ;) That is a rare one. I may have just found a use for cracked skillets. Not ERIE skillets though. Maybe a setting for 8 of #8 Griswold plates.  ;D

I like the Wagner skillet Griddle Thing also. Better than throwing it out. Still makes it useful for many years. I think we should get more folks on here to post some of the "modified" pieces that they have found. It would be intresting to see what ideas people came up with for a damaged piece.

As far as what would make a clean cut like that, I'm not sure. Do we have some machinists in the house that may be able to clue us in?

Just my opinion but I would think it would have to be a liquid cooled cutting device in order not to overheat the iron and distort it like a campfire would do for seasoning??

I think a metal cutting blade on a jigsaw would do that. Just mark a line to follow. Cut it, and clean up with a file.

Jimmy,
We use a plasma cutter at work for stainless steel. I never thought about using it for cast iron, but I'm sure it would work just like you say. I know it cuts stainless like a hot knife through butter.

It isn't exactly a modified piece, but back when I only collected Lodge we needed an ashtray at work. So at a yard sale I found a #8 DO Tawian special for $2. I took it to work, set down on a table on the loading dock, filled it with Kitty Litter and it makes an excellent ash tray. Now for the funny part; although it's located in a covered loading dock, it is exposed to the MS humidity and in the 2 years it's been setting there, not a speck of rust. Kinda makes you wonder what, besides CI is it made of... ;)
Seen it all. Done it all. Can't remember most of it!

Hi Jeff and Jimmy, A plasma and or a cutting torch wont cut cast iron.  I have cut out broken bolts in a cast iron exhaust manifold. The iron will get red hot but only the bolt melted. The threads were just fine. But a hack saw works fine. Or if you have a milling machine you can do a perfect cutting job.  " Apron "
