Martin Cast Iron
« on: October 22, 2008, 02:20:27 PM »
This is really not a question but I bid for on Ebay, and won a Martin C/I skillet. Well it wasn't long until I received the following email:

congrats on the skillet - if you decide you do not want please contact me - it was made by my husband's grandfather and I'm trying to find enough to give to all great-grandchildren for Christmas. We still live in Florence AL and I'm trying to bring the skillets "home". Locals rarely sell. Thanks Alice Martin

I just wanted to share it with you.
Sam

Hi Sam.....If her story is true, and the skillet doesn't really mean that much to you, it might be a good idea if you let her or her husband have/buy it.  If you could establish some kind of repore with her husband, he might be a useful link to information and knowledge about the Martin foundry and the products they made.  He might even have access to some of their old catalogs.  It might just be a good trade off.

Sam, if she does email, you might point her to the forum.  I know I'd love to talk to her or her husband.

Did the seller email you,  or someone who just emailed you about the skillet?   Why would a seller,  sell it then send you that?   Must have bought it too cheap and she don't want "that little money"  for it???

I believe she was bidding on the skillet and I made a last second bid and won it. I did pay less than book for it.

I also emailed her again and pointed her toward this forum where she could list some items she wanted. That might be a good time for some questions for her or her husband.

I agree with Will here. There are PLENTY of Martin skillets out there. And its still not clear to me. Sam, did the lady in question here, was she the seller of the skillet to you? Or, did she contact you after she saw that you bought it from the seller?

She contacted me after she saw that I bought it from the seller? I'm still deciding where this person was real or not  :-/

Sam, I would tend to follow up on the contact, even if you don't want to sell the pan.  This is exactly the way I got in contact with an Alfred Andersen grandson and a Nordic Ware founder's family.  Lots of interesting historical information came from the contacts.  I did exactly the same thing in both cases - made a last second bid to take the item away from them.  You also can get into some pretty pricey bidding wars when a descendant is after something.  I knew who they were in the future and would tend to stay away from the items they wanted (unless I wanted them more!).

Seems pretty simple to me Sam.  If you want the pan, keep it.  There are lots of Martins out there.
(The great grandkids can wait until next year if need be)

Tom,
I've emailed her three times (being on my best behaviour each time)  since the item ended and she hasn't replied yet. I'll give her a couple of days and try again.
