Crack?
« on: August 12, 2006, 02:21:40 PM »
Well, I got my #4 slant Erie, yesterday! The crud was almost a 1/4" in places. Kinda looked like gator hide. I hosed it down with Easy off and stuck it in a plastic tote overnight. Took 3 oven cleaner baths but, I got all the funk off.

The surface looks great. Except... at about 12 o'clock on the inside of the pan, there is a tiny crack. It's about 1/2" long. Doesn't seem to go through to the outside.

Is there anything I can do to prevent the crack from getting any bigger?

*sigh* I knew it was too good of a deal, there had to be something wrong with it. I don't blame the seller. This thing was encased in about 80 years crud build up. There was no way they could have seen it.

First, let me say your dog is awesome.

Second, you should contact the seller and ask for a refund at once (don't delay any longer), or hopefully you selected insurance and you can get your money back.  I have about 100 lbs of scrap iron which I *will* scrap soon if nobody pipes up.

"scrap iron"??? 'Splain?

I just sent the seller an email. I thought I was kinda out of luck. I didn't think the listing referred to chips or cracks but, it DID! YEAH!  I knew I was taking a chance with this one... it was a BIN with bad pictures. But, it was so cheap  :-/ I decided to take a chance. We'll see what he says.

That little fellow you see under my name is Joey, our 12 month old Great Dane.  This is Ike, his 2.5 yr old "brother":

Are you sure it's not a casting flaw :-/

Cindy, can you post a photo of it.  If it doesn't go all the way through, then I would not think it's a crack, but rather a casting flaw like Duke said.  I've bought some that looked like a crack, but were actually a scratch on the cooking surface.  A crack will go all the way through to the other side and will usually leak water, or show daylight when you hold them up in the sunlight.

Yair, don't get too excited about selling them for scrap.  The last time I checked, scrap iron was bringing 5 cents per hundred pounds.  Now copper and aluminum, that's a different story.

I can't seem to get a pic of it. It's so small and my camera doesn't take the best close ups, not THAT close anyway.

After seasoning it, I am sure it's a crack. It does go through both sides. It's also longer than I first thought. The grease really "highlighted" things for me.  :'( sucha bummer... other than that, it's such a pretty little pan.

Now I am waiting to hear back from the seller. Think happy thoughts for me?  :D

I think you can use the skillet with no problems of the crack getting larger.   If an auction states "not cracked" then I would expect the buyer to refund.  When I buy a pan and can't see a crack before cleaning I don't expect the seller to have any better intuition and I have bought the crack.  Unless he has said no cracks.

I agree, Steve. The pan was SO dirty that I couldn't see any problems. But, the seller plainly states that there are no cracks. As of this morning he hasn't responded to my email. Guess I'll send him another...

Now, I have to find another #4. As you said I think think one is fine for a "user" but, I'd like to have a "perfect" one.

Thanks for everyone's input!

That's a guarantee in  my book and the seller owes you a refund.  If you paid by credit card try doing a chargeback if you can since the item received was not what you paid for (a non-cracked skillet).
But first give the seller some time to respond.  Call seller if you can; sometimes talking person to person will make things right.

UGH! I had to email the seller again. Politely said that, perhaps he didn't receive my first email.

His response? "what do you want to do?"

Gimme my freakin money back! Including  shipping! You dolt! ARGH!

My REAL response... "what are your refund policies?" I'm trying to be nice, for now that is.

Michelle,
The seller will probably say you switched skillets on him........his was all cruddy and this one is clean... ;D ;D.  I would be surprised if this seller gives you your shipping back.  Was it insured through the Post Office....I think they do cover postage, but not sure.
Hope it all works out.

Michelle,

I hate to say it but I agree with Scott; if someone starts out being a dolt, they're likely to end up being one.

I am dealing with an idiot seller who shipped a nice griddle in an ENVELOPE.  Of course, it arrived cracked.  When I raised the issue and said I'd sent the money back for a refund, he has in successtion told me that: (1)  he knows that cast iron is not breakable; (2)  his listing says that he is not responsible for damages in shipping; (3)  I have to send him photos of the sekiller before sending it or how will he know that it didn't break when I shipped it back to him; (4) how about I keep the griddle and repair it and he gives me half the sales price as a future credit with him.

I not even going to try dealing with this seller any more.  Unless someone has a better idea, I'm going to send him his darned  photos, then send him back his darned griddle, and tell him to do whatever he thinks is "right".  I expect he'll do nothing.

Excuse me for venting.  I really hope your problem is resolved more easily than mine.  Jean

Vent away, Jean! I'm right there with you. I don't see the guy I am dealing with putting any effort into responding to my emails. Much less a resolution. I haven't given up yet.

I will be sharing this sellers name. After I give him one more chance to respond and RESOLVE this issue. He has LOTS of other items listed on Ebay.

Well, he responded. Yes, he will refund my money, less ALL shipping. Sooooooooo, I'll be keeping the pan. Round trip shipping is almost as much as I paid for the pan ($18 for the pan, $16 round trip shipping).

If this were a higher ticket item, I would go to battle. But, this small amount just doesn't seem worth the time and aggrevation  >:(

I would report that on ebay.  That is a lousy deal and other people should be warned not to do business with him.
