#5 Favorite French Bowl with Lid
« on: August 08, 2006, 10:23:09 PM »
Hi all! Is this the right lid for this item? The "blue book" only shows dutch ovens with lids, not the slant sided French Bowl I believe I have here. If this was a DO I would say it is a size 8. But this is marked a 5.

If thats true Will, how could it be both? I mean, the marks are 5F and 10D, as you say, so it can't be both. And yes it is nice. So what is it? It looks like a regular dutch oven to me, but there is a french bowl, did the french bowl come with a lid? Or is this a dutch oven lid?

Perry,  it is a french bowl cover and dutch oven cover.   Favorite made it that way to cover both of them.

Next question then is value please..... any hint would be nice  ;D

The kinda long story of how I got this was at Brimfield this year were we shopped for a grand total of......45 minutes!!! My wife took on new responsibilities at work recently and had to travel to Mass (from Western NY were we live) and we made it a family trip. Well, we stop in the Mass welcome center and discover not only that Brimfield was starting just that day, but that it was right on our route. So we stop. I have always heard of the big show but never attended. This was Tuesday perhaps, the pre-pre day so to speak and only a few fields were open. We park. We get out out start walking around. I told Laura that I was only going to look for cast iron. And I really was honed in to the exclusion of all else. There were SUCH high prices on things, I was kind of in sticker shock. We are definitely at the low end of the food chain (my wife and I) as far as reselling goes.... anyway, I spot the pot shown above and am attracted to the lid of course and am still enough of a novice that I didnt know it was Favorite till I flipped the pot over. They had $50 on it and I was able to get it for $40. I was happy but still very unsure of the value. Within 10 minutes of that purchase the loudspeaker announced that a severe weather warning was given and that a T-storm was on its way in 15 minutes. I never saw people scramble so fast. Folks covered up, packed up and called it a day. The storm blew to the north leaving us dry but frustrated. Thanks again for the help and it is good to be bacl on the forum....

The French Bowls were offered in the Favorite with or without covers and your cover is the right one.  Great find.  That cover was made to fit EITHER the 5 French Bowl OR the No.10 do.

Value???   I realy have no clue on it.   But I am VERY cheap and I would have paid $50.00 to get it home.   Hard,  very hard to find.

John, you were so close to our home and you did not visit nor come to the convention????? shame on you.  Just kidding.  Any time you are in the area, you are welcome to come visit our house and see my collection.

That offer goes to WAGS members and also non-WAGS members. Becky and I welcome anyone in the area of Clinton to come visit our colllection and see our new kitchen.  I'll let the other WAGS members talk about our kitchen, but we have a VERY nice kitchen, if I must say so myself., lol.

Man, Will, you might be even cheaper than Roger.   ;D

I would put this over $200 easily.  It's the first one I've seen anywhere.  Especially with the lid.  Favorite made great stuff all around.  I'd hold onto it, personally, and let awareness grow or see what other french bowls go for on Ebay, etc.  A beauty like this you'll enjoy displaying for years or passing on.

I am CHEAP!!!!!   But when I want iron like this.  I can't afford $200.00 pieces bacause that is almost a weeks pay for me.   The most we have ever spent on iron was $555.55 for the Wagner Ware Skillet oven 1275.   Do I have any "rare" iron?   Not alot.   But some.

Will, I think all you were saying was that the opriginal price of $50 was fair. I did not know the value of the pan at the time I bought it and was not trying to cheat the seller (no one has accused me of that, but thought i would state it for the record). Nor did you say $50 was your TOP PRICE.

How much of the value of this bowl and lid is due to its particular size? Several folks in this thread have mentioned it is hard to come by. Are ALL of these Favorites with lids hard to come by? Is the #5 particularly hard? ANy additional comments would be helpful. Thanks all.

Well,  I have seen about 2 #10 DO and I don't know if I have seen a #5 french bowl.   I have a FB but I think it is a #3.   Which,  I think....help me out guys....a #8 DO lid fits.

John,  $50.00 was fair.   I know the others are just picking.   But people that realy know me.   Know I am VERY cheap. ;)   Heck,  if I can get something cheap,  I don't think of it as "cheating the seller"   It is just what he wanted.   Like the time a seller got out a #8 Griswold lid that he was thinging of selling.   Asked him what he wanted.   He said $30.00 and I thought about it for a minute.   OK,  I will take it,  I stated.   I was the new owner of a #8 Griswold lid......for a flat bottom kettle. ;)   He got what he wanted and so did I.   Fair!?!?!
