Is there a way to find who patened a piece by date
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:56:38 AM »
I have that trivet i found that is really interesting me to find out who made it.It says July 3 1888.Is there a way to find out who patened this just by date alone?I mean how many people could have possibly patened a trivet on that particular date alone? Thanks again for any help.

Yes, you can do it, but it takes looking at all the numbers during a particular patent date range.

http://www.antiqbuyer.com/patent_dates2.htm

Then you go to the USPTO site and search:
http://patft.uspto.gov

One of our WAGS members has done it (Jesse), but it takes a lot of time and searching to find anything with only having the date.

The easy way Jerry is to visit a US Patent Office and thumb thorough the Patent Gazette.  You'll find your piece in probably less than 15 minutes if not much faster.  Problem is that there are not too many places that have copies of the Patent Gazette.  There are no indexes I am aware of by date.  If you have the patent number you can find the item quickly.

Interesting.  Patent Number is 385,688.  I have a Hill Whitney odorless skillet with the 1879 patent date pertaining to the handle.  I wonder what else Hill Whitney was making and who they actually were.

Jerry, the text of the patent says the patent is for a vegetable steamer.  The trivet is actually an adjustable rack within the steamer.

Steve, I don't know if you saw it or not, but it says that this rack will fit odorless skillets with a tube in them so it may actually fit your skillet too.

Really neat to read these old patents.

Tom, I looked at the patent info but, for some reason, my new iMac cuts off much of the screen on the patent office info which my old, generally misbehaving iMac, didn't.  I want to print out the pages but have to find out how to make them whole and proper sized.

Jerry, I'll get a photo of my pan.

I've attached the pdf to this post.

The patent office has changed the searching procedure since I last looked at it.  You've always been able to search for quite a few things in the newer patents, issued after 1975.  Now, you can also search by date for the patents issued before 1975.  That way, you don't have to use another site and guess what patent numbers were issued on a particular date.

http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/search-bool.html

That's a Big help!

Jesse, I can barely read the PDF with a magnifying glass.  I'll wait to see the patent until I figure out how to make my computer work with the patent website.  My old computer did just fine.
