Scotch Bowl
« on: April 23, 2006, 09:39:07 PM »
Wife picked up a scotch bowl for $5 yesterday.  It has ERIE at the top, N 4 at the bottom. and 782 at the 3 o'clock postition.

Is the N similar to the other alpha characters that don't really have any collector interest?

It is quite badly pitted, and rusty, but the price was right for our collection ::).

Cheers, EDM

Ellis,
I bet the N is for No. and is not a pattern letter.  Maybe the o. went by the wayside.

Ellis,

I'm glad you posted this.  I found a very lonely Scotch bowl at a local thrift shop a few years ago.  It was unmarked, gated, without a bail and two holes were drilled in the bottom.  They wanted $5 for it and I bought it.  I knew it would end up in the garbage dump otherwise.  It works well on a high shelf where you can't see the holes in the bottom.  I'm just a sucker for lonely cast iron.  Wish I could find a lonely Griswold bread pan for $5.

Steve,
There is no indication of a period or the letter o following the N.  It was my first thought that it meant No(#), however without the letter or period, thought I had better ask  The # 4 is about 2/3's the size of the N.

Marty,
99% of our CI is lonely, over 200 miles away in our cabin >:(

Thanks, EDM

I got my first two scotch bowls at this last estate sale -- and Erie #2 and a Favorite Piqua #4.  Now that I have them I must say they are among the most beautiful of cast iron cookware.  Very nice lines and form make for a very pleasing display.

I might collect them especially. Both of my bowls will not be for sale. Congrats on your purchase Ellis, $5 you can't go wrong.  8-)
