First time buying used iron
« on: July 01, 2015, 03:03:39 PM »
I've never bought used cast iron before, just brand new stuff, so I don't know how to identify it. Can you guys help?

Hello Robert, and welcome to WAGS!

I believe the first skillet is an old one notch Lodge.
Can't tell if there may be other markings on bottom, or not.

The second (3) would be a Wagner, and looks like there may be some remnants of old plating on that one.

Welcome, Robert. What part of the country are you in?

You forgot the all important "what are they worth"? We wouldn't want you paying $$$ for a $ skillet ;)

If you're near Mi, or we can make it happen some other way, I'd be glad to set you up with a couple comparable to those at a very low cost. I only paid a few bucks each and I'd pass the deal on to get you off to a good start.

Thanks for the info. I'm in Orange County, CA. I paid $15 for the pair.

I guess it might be a bit tough to meet you halfway ;)
Sounds like a fair price, let us see how they clean up...

Cleaned them up a bit. Here's the supposed lodge. On the handle, there's a P under the 8.

Do you guys think I need to do anything with the bottom of the lodge? Or will it be ok?

Yes, you need to remove the rust. You cannot season a rusty pan properly, and the pan will continue to rust and pit the bottom of the pan. You need to strip all of the old seasoning from the pan first. Then at least give the bottom a vinegar scrub(50% white vinegar/50% water) until the rust is removed. Then re-season the pan.
