Values/general trends
« on: December 30, 2014, 10:23:45 AM »
I was wondering what the general consensus was for general trends in values. I do have the Blue Book and consult it quite often as well as look at ebay. But was wondering if there are any current general trends anyone has noticed? Such as "In general Wagner's are going for less (or more) than the bb value".

Anyone have any anecdotal trends they have noticed as of late?

It depends on where you look and when. For instance, eBay has some pieces that are grossly over-priced (and sell anyway) and some that are really good deals. Just depends on what it is, when it's listed and who's looking.

I also think that there is a relatively new batch of collectors that are driving up prices due to their lack of knowledge or just plain eagerness.

Hello Russ. I could very easily write a few pages in response to your question. But I like the way Ken sums it up.

But I will add that when the big recession hit, it hit the price of cast iron as well. It was a buyers market for sure. But on the truly rare pieces they were and are bringing good money. And I think the trend is that overall prices have climbed in comparison to what they were during the recession.

And one more thing and then I'll shut up. Even todays prices are not near what they were, say twenty five years ago, pre ebay, pre internet, pre FB. During that time prices were very high. Some folks who still have stuff that they bought back then are trying to get those prices for their items. Its not happening because people put that stuff on the market whereas before you did not see that stuff. Some pieces I have never seen out in the real world, but they are on ebay.

Perry I recently bought about 40 pieces from the widow of a old time, pre internet, collector. All of the pieces had hand cut cardboard tags on them with the prices he was selling them for in the 70s and early 80s. I was amazed to see the prices, easily double and triple or more what they would bring today.

As a relative Newbie...

I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

I seem to be doing both.....

But I can guarantee you, I am now stacking up the BSR and New Wagner crap... hoping to get rich quick like the rest of the "gotta make you want it now" crowd out there.......

or not........

Sitting back... putting my feet up... and.......????

Strange things goin' on...... [smiley=question-marks.gif] [smiley=question-marks.gif]

Thanks everyone.

My love is still finding crusty old iron in the wild for pennies, but I saw a nice piece in an antique store the other day and they didn't want to much for it. Since I never buy stuff from these venues, I was curious.

I look at the antique stores but I also check the prices regularly on eBay with the sold completed set so I see what the items actually sold for. Also figure in the shipping cost. Maybe I am wrong but it has saved me money in buying cast iron.

I picked up a rusty Stover No. 7 WI with high base from an antique store for $35 plus tax. This cleaned up with Lye and Electro to a very good condition. Saw the low base Stover 7 sold on eBay for $70 . I'm not selling mine I am giving it to a friend for a house warming gift.

I think many sellers look at the asking price on eBay or ETay and assume that is the price they will get.
