Can you tell me maker, age and value?
« on: December 27, 2014, 08:05:21 PM »
My first #14, it's in good shape but don't see anything exactly like it in the books, looks like a crossbreed of a couple different skillets to me.

The top of the lip to the left of the 14 is very rough like the iron didn't fill the mold there, the other end to the right of the assist tab is slightly rough like it didn't fill there either.

Your pan is a Wagner made #14, made after acquiring and re-tooling the Griswold patterns in 1959(circa 1960's pan).

I think Russell is close enough that I am going to agree with him.  :)

As for value. Its in real good shape and it is a quality 14 skillet, so I would say its worth an easy 150.00.

Thank you very much Russel and Perry, that is good to know and I'm happy to know I got it for a good price, $85. Picked it up at an antique store in Pagosa Springs when I was meeting a guy that lived close to get my wood burning cookstove. I got that #11 WW CO on the same trip from a guy on the side of the road in Chama NM. for $20. I think I usually pay a little to much for my cast iron, at least compared to what I see most people doing on here, but these were really good deals...Well I do need a #11 lid . Thanks again

You are very welcome Glenn. Always glad to help if I can. And yes both of those purchases were good buys. But its not always that way Glenn. Some cast iron pieces are worth, and bring, big money. I like to bring up the auction that I was at, and so were some other WAGS members here, and there was one piece of cast iron that brought twenty one thousand dollars. Of course not too many bring that kind of money but a lot of pieces do bring money. Thats why I like cast iron collecting. There is room for all kinds of collectors at all kinds of levels, whether you are a beginner or a long time collector. You can start collecting cast iron for a few dollars. Do your homework and look at a lot of pieces. They're out there.  :)

Hello Glenn. I have told this story a dozen times if I have told it once. And every time I tell it I like to tell it. It was in Richmond, MO. On here from time to time you'll notice that we talk about the 'Dave Schultz Auction'. He was a long time collector and had amassed what was believed to be the largest Favorite Cast Iron collection in the US, and probably the world I'd say.

It was a two day auction. In fact it was written about in the Antique Weekly. Like I said, I was there and I was bidding on this piece and my friend punched me and said 'what are you crazy'? I told him no I just want to say I bid on it. I could tell it was gonna go big money, so I fell out at a little under tenK. And it went right on up to close at twenty-one thousand dollars. ?There are pictures on here that I took in fact. OH YES, it was a Favorite Double Loaf bread pan. In fact there is one for sale on ebay right now. Find that one and you can see what they looked like. I think I got a picture handy though. The one on ebay now, I'm sad to say is a sorry sight. I would not give ten dollars for it. Let me see if I can post that pic.

That pretty lady holding that pan is our own Sandy Glenn. She and her husband Terry were there at the auction. I met a lot of people there that I knew. Some I knew by name, others by face as well. But it was some auction. I can remember two auctions in my life that I'll never forget and this one is one of them.

WOW Thanks Perry for that info. that's amazing. I figured it had to be some kind of Griswold. I had no idea that any cast iron cookware was valued at that kind of money.

WOW again, Thanks Russel, I don't see any bids so far but I want to keep an eye on that for sure. I don't know what he calls a slight wobble but mine has less than a 1/16", almost none. That really impressed me on that big of a skillet. Thanks again
