Griswold 8 Long Griddle 745
« on: October 25, 2014, 12:28:41 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has an opinion of it's worth?  I am getting my blue book in a week from my local independent bookstore but I am a little anxious.

My understanding is that there are 3 variations of the 745 produced from 1900-1930 two with large trademarks, one marked ERIE. Is my range correct for my piece?

Thank you kindly for any insight.

Hi Mark, nice looking griddle.  Blue book puts this around 1920 and Red book shows a #8 long with the orientation along the short axis with a date of 1909.  Another along the short axis with Erie PA USA is dated 1930.

Not sure how good book values are on the griddles, IMO $30-40 for the #8s is on the low side. Best valuation would be to check ebay completed listings.

Thanks for your input Randy. I was checking ebay and the prices seem to be a little high, in the $70s for these griddles, some over $100 for a number 8 griddle 908

I noticed a number 3 skillet slant logo sold for $66
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Antique-Cast-Iron-3-Large-Slant-Logo-Griswold-Flat-Cleaned-Heat-Ring-/151446154521?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=LXgedYQI3wfC%252BhSscD8OJPt8HYg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I had to double check but I bought 2 of those in 2011 for $12 and $15 dollars off ebay.  It was funny because the auctions were going on at the same time and I happened to be the highest bidder on both.

The price of cast iron seems crazy on ebay right now.  I wish I had some better options but not much where I live.

It kind of ebbs and flows.  A lot of Griswold items, in particular anything with ERIE markings have gone up in the past 2 years. Most gem pans are low compared to 15 years ago.

Keep an eye on Craigslist for your area too, typically the sellers aren't collectors so there are often bargains to be found.
