I picked this up last week. I almost passed, but the price was cheap and I finally decided, for the price, why not? Ha!

It looks like they really scrubbed it to clean it up. At first I thought the lid looked painted. It has a really weird texture.

So, maybe just give it a little more cleaning with some Dawn and #0000 steel wool? Or maybe not even use anything that abrasive?

The inside is a little pitted, but I think it will be fine. I'm just gonna boil some water in it (maybe with a little Cream of Tartar?) and see what happens.

I'd take the handles and knob off and run it through the SCO.  That will even out the swirl polishing on the bottom.

Is that weird texture on the inside of the lid too?  If so, I would bet it was in lye for a little while.  Not too awfully long, but long enough to etch.  It would cover all of it though.  If not on the inside, I don't know.  it is odd.

A little buff with 0000 after the oven would take care of it, in my mind anyway.

addendum:  I had not fully comprehended your post at first.  I assumed you had cleaned it already.  If that is how you found it, I would think it is silver paint.  A cruddy job, but paint.  Hit it with a paint remover and see.  Paint on aluminum is odd, but there are some odd folks around.

Tom, I didn't think about it being etching due to a lye bath. That might be it. Here is a picture of the inside of the lid and a close up of the side.
