Small hibachi charcoal grill
« on: August 07, 2016, 11:31:06 PM »
Hi members,
I just purchased a small hibachi grill and finished restoring it today by painting the outside and inside of it with rustoleum high temp bbq spray paint after cleaning it in a lye bath.  I plan on seasoning the grates that the charcoal sits on and the cooking grates.  However, I now have second thoughts about whether it's safe that I painted the inside of the hibachi.  Should I have not done this?  Should I have just seasoned the entire hibachi like I would a skillet?  Thanks for your help on this.

Timothy,

The technical data sheet for this product is attached.  It states "do not use on metal directly exposed to open flame or in direct contact with food, such as a grill grate."   I believe the Lodge grills are shipped from the foundry with a vegetable oil-based seasoning, both inside and out.

Thanks Jeff.  The question now is what's the best method to removing the paint?  I currently have it soaking in the lye tank.

Use in well ventilated area.. I apply it outdoors. :)

Wipe off well, then scrub with soap and water, then back into the Lye Bath for any 'specks' that may remain.  :)

Thanks Cheryl.  Made an easy restoration project into a more complicated one now but I'll sleep better knowing I'm not bbqing toxicity.

It is not a sportsman grill.  I believe it might be a Japanese one.  It's got a 10" round cooking grate and sits on a wooden base and the only marking is "hibachi" above the air vent.  Will gladly post pictures once the restoration is complete.  Maybe someone here can id it.
