Walnut or soda would work.

Self-cleaning oven if you can get the handles off.  Most electric ones will come apart enough to get the plates in the oven.

What kind of iron is it?

If wooden or plastic parts come off (most do), and you are left with steel rods, the SCO will darken the steel, but Evaporust will remove the discoloration.  Won't hurt aluminum.

Household ammonia will sometimes take off the buildup (if not heavily carbonized).  It will likely turn the aluminum black, but a cream of tartar solution will change it back to normal.

Is it one of these?

These are the earlier versions, like post-WWII.  The later ones have just a steel rod and wooden handles like the 504.

You can drive the wooden handle off the rod fairly easily.  They won't twist as there is a little flange on the rod that holds it.  You can see it in the picture.

I've attached a picture of one I did take the wood off, then the SCO.  The SCO darkens the rods.  You can leave it like that, or pop into Evaporust and it restores them.

It's the 502+504 W/wooden handles. I will try to drive it off!
Thanks Tom

I really like the 502.  It is very elegant and ruffled like a snowflake.
