Porcelain/cast iron...
« on: October 07, 2007, 08:28:40 PM »
Found a cast iron spittoon last week that is porcelain covered in the inside. Outside is bare cast iron.
Outside not bad at all but would like to deep clean. If I filled the thing with sand and submerged to just below the rim in electro rig, do y'all think I will harm porcelainon the inside?
Appreciate any words...

Duke, I don't think the electro will hurt it unless it is chipped, then it might remove it.  Spray oven cleaner or that Dawn power dissolver may be another option if you need it.  Others might know more.

I don't think it would hurt it much, if any. If the outside is fairly clean to start with, it shouldn't take much time to clean anyhow. If your concerned, just try it for like a half hour and then check it. If it looks okay, try for a while longer.

I know that the spitoons are highly rated by some, but in my opinion, thre ain't much you could do to one to damage it or make it worth less.  ;D

Just remember that electro is 'line of sight', so unless you pointed the opening of the spitton at the electrode(anode?) it wont be doing anything to the inside anyway.

Well, if it was me, I'd TRY to use some hot soapy water with Dawn dishwashing liquid. And then if that didn't do it, I'd use some of that stuff that the Queen of clean is using, that power stuff Michelle uses.

OH, I am trying another cleaning product too, its called Fug. If Tide won't do it, and if Dawn won't do, then Fug it.

I use the stuff made for ceramic cooktops.  It's a very mild abrasive and has some bleaching agent too.  Use the scrubbing pads made for this purpose too and you won't scratch a thing.  It does take some elbow grase and letting it sit for a while helps.
