Made it to the big leagues!
« on: May 15, 2007, 08:46:22 AM »
I've been thrilled with my little, stainless steel, food service tub for cleaning. It was a bargain at $10. My system was cleaning like nothing I've seen before. Right up until that thin sheet metal gave way. Holes, holes...holes everywhere! So sad!

While perusing Craigslist yesterday, I found a gentleman with two hydrotherapy tubs. Like the ones used in sports medicine, locker rooms.... Constructed of non-magnetic stainless steel! The little one is about 35 gallons, measuring 28" long x 15" across x 22" deep. Then there's the BIG one  ;D It's got to be at least 150 gallons, measures 42" long x 21" across x 28" deep! I paid $150 for both... SCORE!!!! I suppose that to some that seems high but, have you priced SS drums???? ACK!

I've set up the little one this morning. Need to run to the store and pick up some Washing Soda. I'm SO excited!

Wow Michelle, I think you got a good deal for sure. You're gonna be able to set up a terrific electro system. There ain't no doubt about that. Congratulations, the big league huh? Well, now, YOU, are the big league.  ;D

Michelle, now the only thing left is to give them a fancy name.  Something like therapeuticelectrocleanasauruses or some such.   [smiley=scratchhead.gif] What do you think Perry?

:o Paul, that makes my eyeballs hurt just looking at it! LOL

I'll try and get some pictures this week... I've got the little one set up right now and that puppy is ROCKIN!

MD... when we were on our way home with my new "tanks" Craig looked at me and said. "You're gonna cry when these wear out." He's right! If I knew how long this stainless steel was going to last, I might consider parting with one. Sorry...but, I think I'll be keeping them both. I know my luck... the MINUTE I part with one, the other will sprout a big hole.

Michelle, how long it lasts all depends on what grade of SS they are made of, me, I have never worn out or through a piece of SS and I have cleaned a lot of pieces, so it all depends on the grade.

That's what I figured, Perry...but, I have no way of knowing the grade of SS used for these tanks. I'm assuming (dangerous, I know) that they are of a high grade material. I do know that they are non-magnetic. Other than that... I'm clueless  ;D

If a magnet won't stick to them Michelle, I THINK that is good because, if I'm thinkin right, what a magnet will stick to will rust, and what it won't stick to will not rust. I think I got that right. If not somebody can let me know. I am not afraid to be wrong.

I don't know about all grades of SS but in my first electro setup I used a grid of 1/2 " OD 316 ss tubing for the anode.  316 ss is a common nonmagnetic grade and is it often used for all kinds of industrial uses.  Below is a pic of a section of the tubing after electroing many pieces of iron, so 316 ss will finally be "eaten up".

Mike, thanks for the information. What do you think about this?

I would think that a much larger flat piece would withstand more because the area of detoriation is displaced over a larger area, as opposed to the smaller area with your tubing example where the area of detoriation is much more highly concentrated. Just some food for thought.

I say this based opon my own experience of using sheets of SS in a plastic barrel setup where I had two sheets, one on either side of the item to be cleaned. I first started out using smashed no. 10 food cans and putting two of them together, man, they went quick, after about two times they were plumb full of holes, looked like a sponge. Then I started using the sheets of SS and never did wear a hole in them. I might also add that one advantage of doing it using SS sheets in a plastic barrel is, if you do eat out a hole it ain't no big deal, you can just raise or lower the piece of SS to where the hole is not directly in front of the piece to be cleaned. If the hole is small it would pose no problem though.

Perry, I agree with all of your thoughts.  This tubing was very thin walled .049", it was what I could come up with at a good price (free :)) when I was first setting up the electro.  I was just showing that 316 ss would deteriorate in time. Of course the thicker the piece the longer it will last.  This was my first setup and cleaned lots and lots of iron before it got to this point.  Mike
