Maybe it’s just me, but has anyone noticed the hike in prices on cast iron pieces on eBay?

It really depends on what you are looking for. Popular items are going up, but there are some great deals on lesser known items. Sellers also have been starting out very high, but eventually lower prices.

I haven’t been looking as of recent, but started looking at things again the last couple of days. Just seems like some skillets have been starting at extremely high prices. Breakfast skillets are starting at $150 and up. Like I said, may just be me.

It's not just you, people think that common cast ion skillets are worth a lot of money or they are waiting for a uneducated individual to buy their skillet and they stay on EBAY for months at a time. Does EBAY even charge to keep a listing up for months on end?

Prior to Covid eBay provided sellers with 50 free listings per month, if the item did not sell you could relist it up until you used up your 50 free listings, if the item sold the seller was charged a 10% fee on the sale price plus a 10% fee on the shipping cost...yes eBay who once discouraged sellers from trying to make any money on shipping is making money on shipping.

Once Covid hit eBay increased the free listings to 200 per month which was supposed to end in August but I believe has been extended until October

And the plot thickens! Does seem there is a lot more JUNK at high prices out there. More the reason to be a WAGS member [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Prices are ridunculous!  I just keep walking by SMH....

Took a look through ebay which has been too high on most stuff for years this morning.
Went through the dutch ovens to compare prices. Lots of LIDLESS ovens going for $50-100! :o Some even more!  Sorry but a lidless dutch OVEN IS USELESS except for repurpose as a hanging planter ;D  DITTO on the uneducated public!

I'm just recently back in the market for some new cast iron, having bought all the cookers I needed 15 years ago. The prices on eBay are astounding. I watched some listings come and go, noting the high prices and lack of bids. The unmarked Wagner #12 skillets are now $150?!  I bought two of them in 2006 for $15 apiece!  They've been nice pans for stove top & oven use, & family sized too.   But the real puzzle are the expensive listings on Etsy.  Is anybody buying that stuff?

I just got a new induction cooktop with a bridge feature.  Now that I have 3 little grandkids, I just had to have a long griddle to crank out the pancakes for breakfasts. So I got a gatemarked #7 on eBay  with a French mini loaf pan thrown into the deal. $130 for the two of them. The griddle bottom is unribbed, is low enough for the induction magnets to detect it, & the handles were raised high enough to grasp well, which is why I chose it. No bargain*, but it's flat enough for induction use. The French mini loaf pan is kind of cute -- maybe I'll like using it. 

Glad I don't need to buy a whole range of skillets & Dutch ovens anymore, I couldn't afford  them!

*Of course, there's now a similar one for less, & close by for cheaper shipping  :tongue:

Actually, the free listings are up to 250 a month and it's the new standard with no time limit. Also, ebay forced most sellers into their managed payments program (no more paypal, although I think buyers may still be able to use it) and the fee is 12.55% on the total sale (including sales tax) plus 30 cents. Given that paypal charged around 3% (but excluded the sales tax) plus a small fee, it's a wash in most cases.
