Scanlan & Co kettle info needed
« on: April 13, 2021, 11:59:18 AM »
Hi all - first post here. I'm helping my Mom in downsizing as she moves from her home in TX to ours in NC, and I'm looking to get some info as to when (roughly) this kettle was produced, where and of course what it's value might be. Any info would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Hello Jay,

And Welcome to WAGS !

It appears your Tea Kettle was likely produce in the timeframe circa 1890-1899.

Based on the Style of the Bail Handle, it appears that a Wooden Handle is likely missing from the Bail.

Values would be dependent upon 'restored' condition, and that is unknown at this time.

This one appears to have 'possibly' been Galvanized, which presents a wee bit of a challenge when Restoring.

Thank you for your reply, Cheryl! Given that I'm new to this world (but quite handy once I learn processes), can you point me in the direction of finding info on restoration, as well as sources for the handle? I'm a woodworker and might be interested in fabbing the handle myself - I just need to find out what it looked like in it's original state. Thanks for any info you and others can pass along!!

Best,

Jay

Jay Walton, check out our Cleaning and Restoration Board....

A lot of helpful information over there !

I don't have any pictures of the original handle style, currently... The challenge will be to remove the bail handle.

Cleaning and Restoring these OLD Tea Kettles is a reallll challenge !

(and the inside is usually SUPER challenging)...

Cheryl,

Duly noted.

I think my Mom would like to know if there's any value to it without restoration - is there any way to determine that ... or would it simply be what a person is willing to pay.

Thanks again, Cheryl.

Cast Iron that has not been restored is pretty much going for what someone is willing to pay. Proper restoration will usually bring a better price. Without restoration, one never knows what possible damage lies under the years of use and/or neglect.
