Branding iron?
« on: February 06, 2017, 01:24:39 PM »
For all the cowboys in the group.  Is this used for cattle? Seems a bit large .  2 1/2" x 5"  30" handle. Letters are interchangeable. This one reads PURINA.  Ink stamp maybe?  Thanks, JR

Branding irons are pretty big.  These folks are discussing 3 to 7 inches.

Something with letters that can be swapped out looks like it might be used in some industrial application.  Just guessing, though.

Sometimes this type of "branding iron" is used to mark wooden pallets, boxes, etc. for returning to the sender.

Most cattle brands I have seen have more of a design to them rather than just a name. There is one like it on E-bay now with J.J.TAYLOR on it, marked The Hanson Pat. Appl. For. So it could be for pallets. Anything is possible .  Wow, hit a cow with this thing and I could see why it would jump over the moon ;D  I wonder if someone at Purina swiped it and took it home. Was there a Purina ranch somewhere? Sure wish I could find more letters for it . I would put my name on it and brand everything I could find moving or not :o

Livestock brands usually consists of one to three letters/figures, ( early one iron brands are hard to obtain ).  Mine was a two letter/one figure brand when I had it.  You read a brand top to bottom, from left to right, so mine reads < t, reverse p, slash >.  I made it up with 2 inch letters and a 3in slash for a horse brand, made a nice small neat brand that showed owner ship without disfiguring the horses.

Thanks guys for the input. Guess I'll stick to branding boards and such.  No cows. There won't be any UFC sightings around here. (Unidentified Flying Cows)  Di feeds Purina chow to  some animals so I will just hang it in the rabbit barn and tell everyone Purina sent it to her for ear marking the rabbits! :o ;D
