Yes, You Can Grow A Pineapple
« on: February 07, 2016, 04:05:55 PM »
It may have been five or six years ago, but I sprouted the top of a fresh pineapple that I bought at the grocery store. I looked at the plant today, and I noticed it has now started to fruit. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hello Russell. FIVE OR SIX YEARS :o :o :o :o

At that rate I don't think a person would be growing this for home consumption. Let us know how this comes out Russell. I think thats interesting.  :)

I know it seems like a long time, but it's a house plant. Admittedly, it's been in a rather small pot up until last spring. Fresh potting soil and a bigger pot seems to have done it well. Having grown some of those indoor banana trees that are supposed to produce, I was not expecting this plant to ever fruit. Murphy's law in action.

That's pretty cool, Russ. Makes me want to go buy a pineapple.  :)
Was there a flower stage?, or is that the flower stage. Don't know anything about growing pineapples, but some fruits can self pollinate and some need a pollinator to develop fruit. But you probably already knew that.

Edit: Ok, I just read all about pineapples. They don't need pollination to produce fruit, only to produce seeds in the fruit. They can't self pollinate so you should be good to go. Takes about six months to fully develop.  ;)

Each one of the scales does develop a purple flower. It only lasts about a day, and then it dries up and turns red. Here is a photo that is about as close as I can get to the plant without putting an eye out.

Yeah, I read that each of those petals or scales contain a berry-like fruit and they all merge together to form the one big fruit. Pineapples are pretty unique in the plant world. I never know what I'll learn around here.  ;)

Here are 3 more photos of the fully grown pineapple fruit.
The first photo shows the final size on the plant. The fruit itself is about as big as a large navel orange. The second photo shows the stalk from which the fruit grows. The third photo shows the ripened fruit.
Yes, it tasted just like a pineapple.

Just so you know I'm not slacking, I cut the top from the pineapple fruit, and I sat it in an empty jelly jar. It took just under two weeks for these roots to form. I'll pot it up with some soil in another week or so.
If you want to try this at home, just make sure the pineapple top has no fruit attached. The fruit will mold, and the roots will either die back or not form.
