Griswold No.0 Waffle Iron
« on: September 13, 2014, 06:08:51 PM »
I was at a live auction today and watched one of these sell. My question is what is everyone's opinion of what it should have brought. I will reveal the final bid after some input. I was really surprised.....

AHHHHH, somebody who was at THAT auction today.  ;)

Well, I'll say it should have brought around fifteen hundred dollars. And while you are at it Wes, how much did the number 13 lid bring?  :-/

Wes, when you said in your first comment that you were surprised..................did you mean surprised that it brought so much?   or surprised that the price was low @ $1800.  :-/     just wondering.

Somewhere here on the forum I posted some other prices at this same auction. I forget why I posted the prices on the other thread. I think it just fit in there so I posted the prices there. Now I forget where I posted those other prices.  ::) :-[

Marge, I really have limited knowledge on the rare and highly sought after pieces. So I was surprised by the amount it brought. That it brought so much. Very much a learning experience. By the by what is the determining factor or factors that cause the No. 5 to bring so much? Some bring next to nothing and this one brings a bunch!

Hello Wes. As you now know, all fives are not created equal. The ones at that auction are called, I forget the name they are called, its easier for me to say 'squiggly' because the writing on them is that way. They are the old style ERIE. They made these in a five, two variations by the way, and also in the number nine size although the number nines don't bring much in comparison to the fives. So the rarity of those fives dictate the high price. And you also got just a plain five with big letter block and a smooth bottom. They are worth about twenty five dollars on a good day.

Yes Marge thats exactly the word I am thinking of. Thank you.  :)

I still like to call them 'Squiggly' though.  ;D

That auction was in Pennsylvania Furnace, Pennsylania. And they sure had a lot of nice stuff.  :o

I was also there, and bought a few things.  The 13 cover did stop at $3700.  (and no, I wasn't bidding on it.)

... and there must have been at least two improperly educated people at the auction, because somebody had to be runner-up bidder on that fake toy-sized heart/star. (and no, I wasn't bidding on that, either.)

I have a number thirteen skillet cover, thats not perfect underneath, but the top is pristine. That I would sell. I wonder if this guy needs another one.  :-/
