HOW TO POST PICTURES ON THE WAGS FORUM
Nov 7th, 2013 at 5:34am

We LOVE pictures! and they are a crucial part of our Forum.  Pictures of your Cast Iron Pieces will help us to help YOU, and we just plain love to see more Cast Iron!!

This thread will contain specific instructions to assist you in learning How To post your pictures using some of the more popular software programs available today.

We STRONGLY encourage you to upload pictures directly onto our web server by "attaching" the file to your posts.

We just as strongly DISCOURAGE imbedding links to photo Webservers such as Photobucket, Flicker, Imgur, and other online photo hosting sites. The reason is simple.... when those photo files are removed or otherwise changed on the online hosting service, they also disappear from the threads here on the Forum, and are gone forever, leaving the discussion thread(s) 'dead' and useless.

Please see Reply #3 below for NEW instructions on How to Directly upload photos from an online Webserver!

GUIDELINES when Posting Pictures:
  • Maximum File Size - 400KB per picture file.  This is REQUIRED so that slower internet connections can load the file in a timely manner.
  • Pictures must be resized to 640 x 480 pixels (recommended), or 800 x 600 pixels prior to posting.  Pixel sizes determine the SIZE of the actual image. (Width x Height)
  • The New Forum allows the posting of up to four (4) pictures within each post. Look below, and to the left of the reply box, for the  "Attachments +" (which is above Attachment 1).  Click on the +. Another line will appear under Attachment 1 (Attachment 2).  Click again, and a line for Attachment 3 will appear.  Browse and enter the location of second and/or third picture. Click Post Message. (NOT Preview).
  • Multiple pictures can also be combined into one picture using various software programs, prior to uploading.(See Below)
  • If you select Preview, the picture file(s) will be lost, and you will need to choose Browse and re-select the file(s).

Suggestions to the Photographer when photographing Cast Iron:
  • Choose a well lit location, or use the flash on your camera.
  • Take one picture that shows the ENTIRE bottom of the piece, end to end, including handle(s). (especially important for skillets!)
  • Take one picture that shows the ENTIRE top of the piece, end to end, including handle(s), pour spouts, etc.

----------------------------------------------------------------

RESIZING PHOTOS USING WINDOWS PHOTO GALLERY (WINDOWS LIVE)

In Windows Photo Gallery, RIGHT click over the photo, and choose Resize from the drop down menu.

Choose 640 or 800, CLICK "Resize and Save".

The resized, smaller photo, will be saved to the same folder.

01/30/17 - Aw... Jeez. As of 1/10/17 Windows Essentials is no more.   I will leave instructions for those that still have it on their computers.   Smiley

RESIZING PHOTOS USING IRFANVIEW

Free Software:
http://www.irfanview.com/

Version 4.35

If viewing photos in IrfanView Thumbnails, click on desired photo to launch editing window.
On Menu Bar at top, choose Image - choose Resize/Sample.
A new box will appear.  Choose the desired New Size, click OK.
On Menu Bar, Choose File, then, Save (original folder), type in new file name, Click SAVE

---------------------------------------------------------------------

RESIZING PHOTOS USING PICASA 3

Free Software:
http://picasa.google.com/

Version 3.9

Look below the window displaying your picture.
  • Click on EXPORT, and a window will appear to choose size, and also to choose where to save the file too.
  • This is a bit more complicated than Windows Live Gallery due to the extra step of designating a file location.

  • 01/30/17 - It appears that Picasa will no longer be available from Google.  I will leave instructions for those that still have it on their computers.  Sad

Here is an additional tool which I have found useful:

    http://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/

This is an Image Resizer tool for Windows.

I use this to resize Photos right on my desktop.

Right click, choose Resize, select desired settings.

Do not panic if the resized photo does not appear. Smiley  It is a slight bug that I have found can be corrected.

Right click, select Refresh (to refresh the Desktop), and the resized photo will appear.  (usually in upper left of the Desktop).  I am using on Windows 7.

01/30/17 - Minor update:  I still love this software for use on my computer.  You can also click on Browse (next to Attachment 1,2,3, or 4 below your new post)  and find the file you want to upload, right click and choose resize, and the resized version will appear, and then you select the resized version, and click save. All done !

05-13-2017  Link updated as Software Moved to another page...

While I still prefer my computer to upload (because I am still in Love with my Nikon Cool Pix), I am playing with my iPhone 5s a bit more.

I have loaded the ShrinkMyPic app which I will try to upload from shortly.

Bummer, ShrinkMyPic will not compress the file size enough, only to 500-700 kb

Testing  PhotoShrinker and Photo Investigator posting from my iPhone.

    Two new babies arrived recently!!

PhotoShrinker works well to get the file size below Forum Requirements.  Then can use Photo Investigator to read the metadata to check actual file sizes.  Both Free Apps

I use a program called "Resize it" on my iPhone which is simple and straightforward, and more importantly, free. You just open a picture, select the dimension you want for the longest side of the picture and you are good to go.

I use the app "Image Size" on my iPad that is pretty easy to use - it even keeps my sizing settings stored.  It's a freebie as well.

Thanks Jonathan and George!  I will start an app list above... I am still looking for an app that gives me all the information I want... dimensions (pixel w and h) and the actual file size, all in one app!  Smiley

Also need some recommendations from Android users. (I don't have one!)

I am using an iPhone 5S... pia... does not allow limiting photo size within the camera settings, so HUGE pics to begin with...

I am liking George's suggestion of "Image Size".  Really reduces file size, and allows me to keep both sizes. A bit simpler to use.

Resize It also works... just a little more effort to figure out how to save.

Photo Shrinker did not get the file size small enough consistently (less than 350kb) when using 800 x600, and it insists on deleting the large original file and replacing it.

Photo Investigator turned into a Pumpkin and now wants money.

I am now using Exif Wizard to check the file sizes of pics on the iPhone.

Tom, you can post them in this section.  Just start a new topic and ask your question and attach the pictures.
