I got my Glascock skillet finished. I wish it had been in better shape, but its was the first one I have ever seen. Its pitted and spins a little.

Okay then. First post. We came across this cool item and we wanted to find out a little more about it. We did find another one while researching - at the website for the New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe, N.M. (include the word Wapak in the search and you'll find it. We're newbies in the cast iron area and we want to make sure this is not a fake or a reproduction. Any comments in this regard would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

Teaser: I know what it is, do you?

they were sold on the east coast as eel cookers. Placed over a pan of boiling water, the eels were coiled around the ribs to keep them from curling while cooking. Easy to pour off the grease( eels are quite oily). Found the ad in an old catalog reprint. Tried it once with sausage, not bad. Sue

I picked-up this piece over the weekend.  I've been looking for a nice Griswold round griddle.  I saw this one and I decided to spring for it since I haven't seen many with the Sindey O script.  It has some pitting on the bottom but the top is in good shape.  I could be a sucker for getting this but I couldn't help myself!  It should make a nice user...

I got this Cox, Whiteman & Cox waffle iron last weekend.  It's in pretty decent shape.  I haven't seen too many of these in my short time as a cast iron enthusiast.

I just bought these at a farm auction last Saturday as a set. Took them home and cleaned them up as my first restoration product ever. I still have some seasoning to do, and don't know anything about this piece but it is in good shape and I plan on using it when seasoning is complete. What do you think?

Hi,
Just wanted to show off a find that I'm pretty proud of.  Found this in an atique shop all crusted and caked for only $4.00!  Took it home, cleaned it up and this is what I saw! Wink

Will try to post 4 pix of CI pieces I found in 2012. Not the most exciting pieces, but have to take what is available up here in beautiful PNW, and I didn't have them in any course, so home with me they came last year.

Pix # 1, Axford Broiler.  Has PAT. PENDING on top of handle.

Pix #2

My Wapak #3 Indian Head.  Was in a stack of 8-10 size 3 skillets.  50% sale in the store, so got it for $10.

The Wagner National #7 was so crudded over that the only thing sort of visible was the 7 on the handle.  Nice surprise whan cleaned up.

Part 2

Griswold "The American" waffle iron
Wagner #8 cast aluminum DO
Modern Lodge grill pan
Modern Lodge BSA camp oven

I purchased the lodge camp oven several years ago, but never really knew how to take care of it. Last August, it got a bit rusty, and I went online to see how to repair these things. I landed on a bunch of vintage CI sites (including this one), was fascinated by vintage CI, cleaned and seasoned my camp oven, then bought the round griddle on Ebay the same day. It's snowballed a bit since... Thanks everyone for all your input during my journey. Smiley

Besides the American made CI, I also have some English that was brought here by my great grandmother. My cousins and I divvied up the "old junk" that no one wanted after my grandparents died.
Nobody wanted these.
(There are examples seen in the Downton Abbey kitchen.)

The big one is a 6-quart saucepan.

And this is the Griswold chicken fryer I have been using for about fifty years, inherited from my grandmother.

There is this "mystery" skillet, which is rather cruddy - I've used it a lot for baking bread at high temps in my barbecue - after cracking a LeCreuset pot - so it has been exposed to high temps and not been treated all that well, occasionally knocking off some of the burnt-on stuff with the wire grill brush.  I've tried to chisel off some of the burnt on polymerized gunk, but it is not easy. (oven cleaner had little effect)
I bought it when a local sporting goods/gun store that carried some "camp cooking" utensils went out of business some time in the '90s (I think).
It's hefty - weighs more than similar sized skillets.  I haven't been able to figure out who made it. It says "American Cookware" and made in the USA  and it isn't old - it was new when I bought it but the store had been in business since 1940 but I don't think it had been on the shelf that long...

I would like to know something about it, I don't care if it is worth anything, I'm just curious.

This pot is marked on the bottom "ERIE"  and it has a rim around the outer circumference (aka heat ring).

I've used it for rendering fats - my grandma's cook used it only to render beef kidney suet - for preparing the English cakes my great grandmother loved.

If there is another mark on this, I have not been able to find it.

14-inch side-handled round export ware griddle.  I had this posted on the old forum, somewhere, too.  Catalogue 40 lists five sizes, with this being the middle one.

Hello Brian. You have some very nice looking iron there. Thank you for sharing with us. I also like the way you have your pieces labeled, looks professional as all get out. I see this is your first post as well. So welcome to WAGS. Its great to have you join us. I see you have a Johnson Combo Cooker there. I see parts of them all over the place where pieces have got lost. I try to ask the sellers what are they and I very often get a chuckle out of the responses I sometimes get.

Hello Brian. What we don't know we just make up.  Grin Grin

Actually we have some long time collectors on here including myself. And there are others as well. We don't know it all but collectively we know quite a bit. If you have any questions Brian we'll try to get some answers.

If you hang around awhile you may want to consider and check out our 'dark side'. We have the public side of the forum that we are on now and you have to register to be here. And the 'dark side' is the members side where you join and pay a small yearly fee. We have quite a bit of information here on the public side. But it pales in comparison to what we have compiled and is available on the 'dark side'. So hang around and have a good time. And jump in whenever you take a notion to post or ask a question.  Smiley

First post.
Picked up this wagnerware double loaf pan yesterday at local thrift shop $22.00

Seasoned earlier today using 100% Flaxseed Oil .
Usually use Crisco Lard .
Seemed to do a pretty good job giving it a really nice patina.

Over time I will attempt to post pictures of my collection at least my favourite pieces

Hello Mike. You have some nice looking iron. Thanks for posting some of it and showing us.  Smiley

And hello Ken. You did a good job on that piece. That is a later made piece by Wagner. Sometimes you see them and rough as a cob in places. Looks like you got a nice one and the cleaning and seasoning make it look that much better. And what to use to season with, well, we have beat that horse a lot and still beat him at times. I use crisco myself. Others have had some problems with flaxseed oil. That lady that has touted using flaxseed oil has gathered quite a following. She cuts her own hair and will show you how to do that, how to season skillets, and she also reads the moon and the stars in case you are interested in what the moon and stars maybe telling you on any particular evening. I have tried to talk to the moon and the stars myself but they never listen to me. I am told they listen to her.

Hello Mike. You have some nice looking iron. Thanks for posting some of it and showing us.  Smiley

LOL

Thanks for the heads up on flaxseed oil. I for one am willing to try new ideas. Really haven't given it the real test which is cooking with the skillet.
I have two types of pieces ( show / display and those I use for everyday use )
For show pieces  I look for great patina for display purposes.
For everyday use its ability to perform is more important.
Therefore always in search of a cooking surface which will stand the test of time which is still a work in progress.
I have collected approximately 40 plus pieces over the pass several years of which half see regular use while set up on display.
When I get a chance I hope to post more pictures of pieces that I have acquired to date.
As well hope to gather up all the knowledge this site has to offer.

That's nice James.  I wish I had the self control to keep my collection so it would fit in one picture.

You need to start to worry when it won't fit in one room anymore.  As it progresses, you have to start parking the car outside, then you worry more about the outbuildings rather than the house when looking for a new one.

Thanks Tom. That's just what I have decided to keep. That is a small percentage of what I have... I park the car outside.

Be careful with those Martins, Chad. Once they get ahold of you, they don't let go!

Thank you Mr. Jim. I have found that out the past couple months. I found one piece cleaned it up, and set it up in my house. Next thing u know I'm diving in every barn and house place that I can get permission to look in. Can't seem to get enough of it. Especially after finding this website.

Two pieces I came across yesterday. Haven't cleaned them up yet. I'm a new comer to the collecting so still have a lot to learn. Are these pieces pretty common? Newer editions or older?
