Black "paint" after cleaning?
Feb 8th, 2010, 7:38pm

Thanks to all of you on the forum I have set up Lye and (in a different vat) Electrolysis and have about 30 pieces looking very close to new.  I have a problem with several however:  after cleaning there is a blotchy black residue like paint, on some areas of a couple pieces.  It is so smooth you can't feel where the edge is.  It appears randomly, inside or outside, looking like an ink spill.  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Dan I think I know what your are talking about but a picture would help??  Assuming that the pieces are cleaned and not seasoned there are just some places where there will be darker spots and the iron appears to be stained??  Otherwise you could try rinsing the piece with cold water and wipe it with paper towels until it is clean.  You will get a whole bunch of black stuff off the piece and it will not stop coming off until the piece is dry??  If this doesn't help you out just keep firing away at the questions!!

Without looking at a picture, it sounds like carbon to me. Lye or electro will eventually remove it, but it will just take time. A S-O-F-T stainless steel brush on your drill will also do the trick.

Sam I never thought of that??  I was thinking that the piece was totally clean but you might be onto something!

Thanks, guys.  I'll get a S-O-F-T SS attachment and give it a try and report back.
